CD player problems

Featured Replies

hi all,

i have a Pioneer system in my house(XC-IS21T). the problem has just appeared last night. playing a CD you get loads of crackle through the speakers, ive tried various CD's so its not scratching. the tape player plays fine and so does the radi, so its just the CD. any ideas?

Kenny

Your CD lens is dirty. What you need is a lens cleaner, its a special CD that has little brushes stuck onto the surface. You can get them cheaply from maplins, or from your local computer store get a CDROM lens cleaner.

ive tried cleaning the lens with a cd cleaner disc, but still no joy

Have you listened to the output of the CD player itself (before your normal cables and amp)? Does the player have a headphones socket you could use to test that the problem really is with the player?

If you had a dirty lens I would normally expect difficulty seeking, rather than crackling, but if you have a spare 10 mins, CAREFULLY clean the lens directly with a cotton wool bud and isoprop' alcohol.

Hi Kenny,

How is the CD connected to the amp? Is it through an optical or coax connector,or is it just the usual left and right phono connectors?

I'd see if i could transfer the cd output to the aux in of the amp to verify if it's really the cd,or a fault in the cd in amp section.

tried cleaning the lens at the weekend, no luck. still crackling, Tape is fine!

Sounds like it might be a problem with the connection from the CD mechanism to the board - does this unit have a moving CD tray? I know on some systems integrated systems the cable would move with the tray but would also rub on part of the chassis or gradually flex itself until it started to crack. Pop it open and check the wiring...

it has a vertical cd player, the cover(drawer) slides down to allow cd to be inserted then it slides back upto cover it.

Kenny...

Is it a all in one 'midi' or 'mini' system or is it seperates...???

Sounds like a electrical connection issue... If it is seperates then it will

either be the phono cable or the connectors either on the CD or the amp..

If it is a midi type system these can be connected using ribbon cables

or internal... If this is the case then you might need someone who is handy with a soldering iron or a new cable...

cheers

it is a mini system(cd, tape and radioall in one) with a seperate amp

How's it connected??

If it registers the CDs OK (track list & playing time) and find tracks reasonably quickly, the transport is OK.

If it is just crackle, possibly the analogue section or DAC has blown. I've got a similar problem with a NICAM tv at the moment so I'll let you know if I find any more!

connected with a red and white lead, also a black cable going from amp to main unit probable passing the power

When you have a cd playing.. go and 'wiggle' ( Strange term but its Friday!! )

each cable... if the crackling gets worse then you will have found the problem, if nothing happens it will be internal...

I doubt it is a 'blown DAC' as there would be NO sound... CD's are playing ok..

It has all the signs of either a cable joint problem or a dry solder joint on the connectors of the CD or Amp .

cheers

Or component failure such as one, some or all electrolytic capacitors in the output stage - they don't last forever. Probably time for replacement :-(
