bodgit & scarper for a noisy ARB

Featured Replies

you will need a lathe and some brass or stainless bar, about 25 mm diameter. I used stainless, to make the following replacements for the infamous plastic sleeve.

Dimensions are: ID 18mm to suit my roll bar

OD1 – 22mm x 15mm

OD2 – 19mm x 30mm

Turned on a lathe, then carefully sawn in half to make 2 shells.

Then remove ARB bushes and either remove the plastic sleeve or push it inboard like I did.

Then clean it up and degrease, I used brake cleaner, mix up and slap on some epoxy resin, put the 2 half shells in position and tighten a jubilee clip over the large diameter. Obviously the resin will squidge out and will need cleaning off, choose a resin that stays workable for an hour or so, I used Mazel Metal.

Refit a new bush,

and the clamp,

and enjoy the silence and the smugness of knowing you've just saved yourself £180.……………If you want bigger pics, PM me with an email address.

Manufacture them mate. I don't think anyone would mind you making a few quid here and there.

thought about it, but would prolly get into trouble with my boss

does the thin machined section fit inside the ARB bush ?

If you can find a local machine shop, i'm sure they chould knock some up if kwacka could supply a couple of dimensioned drawings. I reckon the most you'd pay is £80......

I can make up some drawings and possibly get these made.

Ive PM'd kwacka to get a more detailed picture of the bushes.

If someone can confirm the sizes of the bush, there maybe a few different sizes or custom sizes.

I've drawn this from the details provided above.

I can get these made out of brass, maybe stainless, depends on work.

Hi Chaps,

ric04vrs yes the shells fit inside the new bushes - I did use 18mm bushes which fit very snugly with a bit of silicon grease. The shells simply replace the crappy plastic sleeves. mluton has the drawing right, of couse you'll need to adjust to suit the diameter of your arb. You may also notice that the smaller diameter isn't long enough to go completely through the rubber bush - a few mm of the bush actually sits on the arb to act as a sort of seal - bit anal but I thought of it so there!

I only decided to do this because I had the facility to repair, but not to replace the arb, I can't see any reason why it shouldn't last indefinitely, just the bushes should wear. Even if you use brass it should last the life of the car. Feel free to PM me with more q's
