Any PS3 owners??

Sony announced on Thursday that owners of any Internet-connected PS3 will be able to participate in a wide-ranging, distributed, scientific experiment led by Stanford University's Folding@home program, which is seeking to better understand a process called protein folding and its relationship to several serious diseases.

Wonder what power the PS3 will have relative to a PC??

Shed loads as it has a very parallel CPU, ideal for representing the models.

may have to try it, along with the Linux install that you can run on it.

I'm just downloading FAH for the PS3 at the moment... I'll let you know what its like when its done. Hopefully I can keep going on the same account I've already got.

My PS3's up and folding now :D

edit: yes, you can go into the identity section and put in your name and team number :)

It seems rather quick at folding  can't remember what my a64 does (hasn't been folding for a few weeks now), but the PS3's currently doing one frame every 0.08 seconds :D

:eek::eek::eek:

Surely it must be a tiny crap WU... my opty can take up to an hour a frame somtimes

Edited to add.... seems the PS3's are "quite quick" at folding:

To my astonishment, I discovered that a small legion of 13,000 PS3s running the Folding at Home app account for most of the computing power in the project, amounting to about 56 percent (PS3s = 316 measured TFLOPS) of the total.

On average, between the superfast and superslow PCs, 159,033 PCs are only doing about half that much. (151 TFLOPS). Essentially, 13,000 PS3s have just made the Folding at Home Project the fastest distributed computing project on the planet, ever. (I believe it used to be SETI @ Home, which was something like 280 TFLOPS.) This also means the PS3 met Stanford professor Vijay Pande's expected one-month goal in one day. (We'll update this post with confirmation once Dr. Pande gets back to us.)

Thats awesome! I didn't realise they were SO powerful when it came to folding! I should buy another 4 and then No.1 spot here I come lol.

Also, does how fast a unit is processed affect how many points its worth? Or is it just by processing faster, you can get through more work units?

Thats pretty impressive folding result... wouldn't like the electricity bill though as I've read that the PS3 can be quite power hungry

221w under full load apparently.

So you can add fan heater to the list of features? :D

Its not too bad actually, but if I have my PC on as well, the room does noticeably heat up. Maybe I should fire up my 360 as well. Could heat the house with them lol.

Yeah.. it can get quite warm in here when i have a few of my machines up n running :D

Whats the fan noise like on the PS3? I've read that it's near silent compared to a 360

Yeah, its a lot quieter than the 360. It does get louder when its warm, but nowhere near as loud as the 360, although most of the noise from a 360 is from the drive as opposed to the fans.

So it's more like the PS£ is just better put together/designed then...

hhmm.. I wonder how long it'll be before Sony drop the price :D

Just looking at Xavs results now his PS3 has started turning in WUs again :eek:

averaging about 1000 points a day

Muahahaha :D :D :D

edit: see attached production pic. Looks like the PS3 will boost Brisk's folding rate somewhat :)

Does anyone know why my sig thing isn't getting updated? Here I am, churning through work units and not getting any recognition for! :(

Shame is that they'll probably boost quite a lot of other teams figures too, once people realise it's possible :)

Steve

I read an article just the other day that PS3 folders now top the list of processed units, even though their number is the smallest... Very impressive.

We'd best hope all the PS3 owners don't get together and start their own team. :(

Well.. They do have their own "default" team... as does the googletoolbar people - aka muppets who dont know what theyve installed

Well Folding isn't directly related to the speed but more the parallel nature I was running about 16 x86 cores to get about 1200 points a day, so you can see that the PS3 is very quick.

If people have a PC farm it would be cheaper to install a PS3 farm :)

And do away with their central heating :D

You mean like this one... +1,312 places in the last 7 days!!!
