64bit OS

Featured Replies

will a core2duo run a 64bit version of windows?

is it worth it?

would you have to buy a 64bit copy or can a 32bit version be upgraded?

Quick answer - Yes...

Not worth it tho as 95% of applications are built for 32-bit; really no point going 64-bit unless running some 64-bit application...

Will recommend Core2Duo thought (got it in my MacBook Pro) and it is a very noticable difference...

Core based CPUs support EM64T extensions, the problem is with the [lack of] driver and software support at the moment.

I think you need to reinstall, rather than upgrade

bum, we already have a core2duo but was left on my own to think again.

As above, core2duo will do 64bit, but its not worth it, unless you want lots of driver issues, and have to run 2 versions of IE because ie plugins (flash etc) are mostly 32bit.

oh.. it wont be any faster either..

If you want to run a 64bit os linux is the only way to go really but again why?

If your wanting to use over 3Gb or ram then do it as thats only a reason to do so with Windows.

Echos the comments above about it working great in a MacBookPro but we arent doing the Mac/PC debate again lol

Run windows xp 64bit on a few computers at work, drivers are real trouble, and no normal PC use benefits at the moment, I would give it a couple more years yet before worrying about it.
