Big increases in road tax this week?

What difference does their height make , unless you are planning on going over the top?

Does anyone think that the people in the £60k Range Rovers and Cayenne's, and all the Ferrari, Lambo, Aston's and other supercars will give a rats @$$ about an extra £100 a year ? Think about things a bit more laterally. Whilst you gloat about your tax on your economical little runabout only going up a tenner or so compared to the huge increases on so-called gas guzzlers, you'll still be paying an extra tenner or more, and Gordon has made you happy about it. On the other side of things, all the numpties who believe the green eco climate BS will be overjoyed. Who said you can't please all of the people all of the time ?

But what about the people with classic cars (those not tax exempt) who use them for maybe a few weekends a year. New cars even.

It should be on how much you drive, not fair to charge everyone the same.

After all, someone could be driving a 'eco' car and doing loads of miles a year and putting out more crap than someone who has a buggatti veyron.

Just because people can afford the extra doesnt mean they should pay extra.. not unless they are actually doing something to affect things.

So, we have the ideal system already in place. Fuel tax. The more you use, the more you pay. Lots of miles in an economical or few in a guzzler it still ends up fair. The only downside is that the government can't waste shedloads of money on setting it up, hide in that expenditure all its secret costs (war etc) and track the movements of free individuals. Call me cynical.

As for the eco car thing - the Prius is not as ecomical as my tuned Fabia vRS, by a LONG shot, in most real life conditions...

I'll bet CO2 and particulate emissions are lower though! Still, wonder what the imapct of scrapping all the batteries in a Prius is?

I'm annoyed cos my Navara uses less fuel per mile than my Dads 530d, but I bet we get taxed more! We get 32mpg on the work run and upto about 37 on a long trip. The BMW struggles to get 29 and 34mpg.

And before anyone goes on about big 4X4's, we actually need one. Try towing a 2600kg trailer accross muddy fields with an octavia before you judge!

Phil

The thing is though, its not just 4x4s and big engined gas guzzlers that fall into the current £210 bracket. People carriers and IIRC the 2.0 Mondeo also fall into this category. Increasing the tax to the extent they want will affect joe bloggs just as much as the rich and prosperous.

The increase will also only affect post 2006 cars, those with older cars will pay simillar rates.

All just another reason to emigrate.

And the 2.0l Fabia is also in the top tax bracket. Which is crazy, considering it's an 11k "sensible" car that only puts out 115bhp!

Chris

It's an excuse to get yet more tax from us-try getting regular and reliable public transport in a rural area-no chance.:thumbdwn:

Am not a great fan of the chelsea tractors unless like Phil you REALLY need one.

The farmers, and those living in the wilds of the countryside, where they are a necessity, i have no issues with.

It is the school trips in towns and cities or single occupancy in these same areas that I question the real need for one.

Mind you, having spent a short time back in a city, the local councils that add load of speed bumps in questionable areas, they would drive anyone to changing to a chelsea tractor.

If Skoda put an extra 12V battery in their cars with 1 electric motor, it could then be classed as a Hybrid - 0 tax.

Other wise switch to a Smart fortwo it is only £40 road tax P.A.

Don't be daft - it's all about saving the planet :P:rofl:

Chris

yeah, and I'm a clog wearing sprinkle muncher :D

Why not tax the 4x4s by postcode? Rural postcode + 4x4 = normal road tax, urban postcode + 4x4 = double tax?

Big engines?

I bet my Mondeo 2.0 petrol will get hit :(

Auto's in small cars just do not work as well as heavy cars. Wish I'd just said sod it and bought the V6 one now.

All just another reason to emigrate.

True.

The equivalent of road tax here cost me $178 for the year - about 60 quid

98RON unleaded is about 48p a litre.

Wages are lower though so it balances out somewhat.

Can't remember what I paid for my road tax on my MkI Octavia vRS.Sure it was about

Is the octavia Mk 1 vRS a super polluter then:(

Depends how you measure pollution. CO2 seems to be the favoured pollutant of the hour, but I'm pretty sure a diesel kicks out a lot more nasty stuff so it's crazy that it's taxed like this, imvho!

Chris

But all dervs have a surcharge in addition to the standard rate, so it balances out.
