VRS Very Poor MPG

Recommended Posts

My VRS has suddenly started Juddering slightly when I put my foot down and I am lucky to get over 20 mpg (average 2 is 24 mpg) I have tried cleaning the MAF but it has made no diffrence although I did not take the MAF out of the tube.

I have ran vag com and not faults are found, is there any readings I can take with VAGCom to test the MAF?

also what other faults could cause mpg this bad? Please help it is costing me a small fortune to run the car. I am lucky to get 200mile to a tank of fuel (of superunleaded)

Thanks in advance,

Mark

You can do a log of engine block 002 but you need to be in third gear from about 20mph at floor it all the way to the red line then you are looking for about 150-160g/s at about 6000rpm. You could do it in fourth or fifth but when you hit the redline you will be going like the clappers so third is better

Obviously you need to be safe when doing this i.e. private road

You can also use VAG-COM to monitor coolant temperature. When my Felicia was refusing to idle after a cold start, a diagnostic check revealed that the coolant temperature was way over 100°C - which was patently wrong. The engine was being underfuelled when cold hence the problems. Conversely, if the reading (signal) had been too low, the engine would be overfuelled when hot.

Does your car have the later modified dual temperature sensor fitted?

I had the Temprature Sender replaced about 12 months ago, it was replaced for a so called green top one, is this the part you are refering to.

My coolant temp gauge stays a 90 once warm

That is the part. I would still double-check the coolant temperature reading using VAG-COM. The temperature sender is a dual one and it might be that the temperature reading being provided to the engine ECU is wrong. I think you can also check the intake temperature as there is a sensor for that too.

Can't offer any advice as to what may be wrong :( but I found recently I was struggling to get 250 miles to a tank (worst was last week at 230 before the light  ) so this week I have "adjusted" my driving style somewhat and after resetting the 2nd trip computer averages when filling up I now have the average at around 30.8 and have already done 250 miles with plenty left (predicted 110 ish).

It does involve driving like a grandad but just goes to show that when driven enthusiastically the vrs is a guzzler indeed, although it doesn't sound like simple heavy footedness is your problem!

Looking at that it seems that they probably disconected the battery but the misfire on coil pack 2 seems to be the problem!;)

Right the car is back to how it was when I started the this thread, judder if you give it low throttle (fine if you floor it) not great when the wife and kids are in the car as I get told off for flooring it and the MPG is still on about 20mpg.

The coil pack 2 has been repalced.

I have cleaned the throttle body (as per the surging thread in the octavia forum) but I did not replace the paper gasket (as the local dealers did not have them in stock) it did look ok but I dont really know so I guess another trip to the biggest Audi garage in the uk (lol) for a piece of paper.

The part name for the oxygen sensor is lambda probe. There are 2 - one before the catalyst and one after. They have different part numbers and are different sizes.

Just checked my other coil packs and the other 3 are all H versions, is this not the onnes that got recalled?

Just did a couple of vag com logs and there according to block 16 there is a misfire on cyl 4 (see attached logs) what do you guys reckon? should I try and get Skoda to replace the other h versions? whould they do it even if the have been fine for 5 years?

The D, G and H versions were the subject of a replacement Bulletin which has since expired after a suitable time interval for all affected cars to be checked and have the coil packs replaced as necessary. If you car has a full Skoda service history - ie there has been at least one opportunity for the Bulletin to be actioned by a dealer but it hasn't - then I would approach your local Skoda dealer and ask for a goodwill claim to be made to Skoda UK for the coil packs to be changed.
