ADSL interference with phoneline.

Featured Replies

I have a problem at a friends house...

She has ADSL and a 3com wireless router.. (yes there are microfilters on each socket)

Now over the last few days she has been saying the internet has been getting slower and slower and now finally it will not sync and connect, also when she picks up the landline phone, there is lots of computer fax/modem styleee interferance... this stops when the router is not plugged into the phonesocket, i have tried changing various microfilters/trying different sockets etc but to no effect..

Does anyone know what the problem might be?? is likely to be the router, her house's phone wiring, or something at the exchange that has gone wrong?

If you can hear the interferance then the internet will almost stop....should think it's either a line or exchange problem......might be worth trying a different router or for a now an adsl modem

first things first

unplug all devices and plug an analogue phone in to the test socket (remove the bottom half of the bt faceplate to get to this

try a quiet line test, dial 17070 and select i think option 2

is there any noise on the line? if there is then theres a wiring problem with bt's wiring, raise a fault!

if there isnt any noise then its an issue with the internal wiring

The noise is only on the line when the router is plugged in.. its fine without it

have you plugged the router in to the test socket and tried it without any of the other extensions wired up?

Are the microfilters active or passive type.

If they are passive get rid of them and try an active one, as that is exactly what BT will tell you to do.

The active ones are usually the ones with the leads on it.

You are plugging all devices into a microfilter inc the phones aren't you? It sounds like a dead filter to me.

Yep agreed, sounds like a dodgy filter.

One of mine died the other day for whatever reasons, odd really as they are fairly simple devices.

At my inlaws the ADSL line has died a few times recently, phone line was fine though, might have to see if they need a new filter too, or have an unfiltered phone plugged in somewhere on that line, which come to think of it, wouldnt really surprise me as I didnt recheck after they got new phones... Hmm that could be it :D

Bizzaro point but also make sure the ADSL device (router etc) is filtered too as while they should, in theory, work without the filter and no other devices on the line, the ADSL MAX appears to have stuffed that quite nicely.

I'll try not to be too little help .......

2 weeks after I bought my first router, we had a thunder storm. The next morning the dsl light was lit (indicating that the line was ok) but the internet light was not.

I also noticed alot of noise on the line, that hadn't been there the day before and went when the router was unplugged. I too suspected the filter (which was built in to the face plate) and changed this. It made no difference.

In the end I borrowed another router and it worked, so I sent mine back and got a replacement.

Therefore I suspect it may be the modem on you router......

When the interference happens does the phone line go busy as well?

If you try to make a call and you get no dial tone?

Line is probably in loop back mode.

Is teh telelphone on an extension and not haning off the microfilter? Try sticking phone on the microfilter.

Right... additional thing shes just told me:

the router works until the phone is picked up/someone calls, then it drops the connection... it does definately sound like a microfilter problem.. but ive tried 3 different ones with nothing else plugged into the phonelines..

how many phones etc are loading the circuit, perhaps the number of them is too high - can't remember what the UK system is but in NL it's up to 3 phone-equivalent loads max 'officially'

slower and slower internet - shes not with tiscali is she?!!

Worse.... plusnet

Just had exactly the same problem with my Grans router, was a dodgy router in the end. Whenever you plugged in the router you would hear noise on the line, new filters, disconnected extn wiring and so on but exactly the same problem as you have.

Try a new router.
