Sourcing Oil online

Featured Replies

On my way to London on Monday the Maxi-dot bleeped "Check Oil Level"

So when I finally arrived at my destination I let the car cool down (about 5 hours) and check the oil.

The oil did not even touch the dipstick (complely dry). I initially paniced and thought I best get some oil at the earliest opportunaty.

However, the car is setup for Variable servicing so needs the LongLife oil. Unfortunatly the service station only had the standard oil, so I bought a 1 litre and used the lot.

the dispstick now reads MIN.

I contacted the dealer after checking that the car is set for Variable Service (via VAG-COM and MSN) thanks VRStu - As he said must be the first VAG-COM over MSN.

They tell me that car will be OK with normal oil for top up, but the service may be asked for sooner due to less quality oil.

They also mentioned that although the dipstick did not pick up any oil it is quite possible that maybe 1-2 litres may still be in the sump as the stick only dips near the top 1litre.

Can anyone suggested an e-tailer for the correct oil, and what oil specification i need?

2006 TDI 140

Again the Service Book only mentions Petrol Oil Spec's ??? Have I got the wrong Service Book?

I used Opie Oils for my oil last time. The oil was much cheaper than halfrauds and I think I got free next day delivery.

If you're not sure which type of oil you need, send them a message and they'll happily recommend one...

Pages 250 and 251 of the Owner's Manual contain details of engine oil specifications for petrol and diesel engines for fixed and flexible service intervals. Diesel engines operating on flexible service intervals need one of the following oil specs:

VW 506 01 - only for engines without a diesel particle filter (DPF)

VW 507 00

I don't know whether or not your car is fitted with a DPF but both oils should be widely available. See below:

You need to be aware of the following caution in the Owner's Manual about topping up with an oil other than of the correct spec above.

'In exceptional cases, you must top up only once (sic) engine oil complying with..... specification VW 505 01 (only for diesel engines) to a maximum of 0.5 litres. You must not use other engine oils - risk of engine damage!'

But regardless of that warning, any oil is better than none. For interest, what was the 'standard' oil you put in?

I take it that you have not been following the advice in the Owner's Manual to check the oil at regular intervals, preferably every time after the fuel tank is filled or after driving for long stretches? :rubchin:

Shell stations sell helix VX which will be fine.

Others I know of are:

- castrol edge 5w-30 / SLX long life II/III

- Millers do a 506.1 oil

- Esso do a 506.1 in a green bottle.

Anything that meets VW 506.1/507 for the dervs assuming you don't have a DPF otherwise it will be VW507 only.

looking at that website the castrol edge 5w-30 is the same price as halfrauds for the 1 and 4 litres so you may as well buy locally if youve got one near you.

Thats the same oil that ive been using to top up but i recently priced up the shell helix in my local shell garage which was

Didn't think to check the manual - I am an IT Consultant and don't do manual's

How do I know if i have the DPF or not ? Can I spot it by looking under the bonnet?

I could take up that occupation, but as the car is able to notify me of low oil I assumed that would be acceptable, but as I didn't think I would be stuck 250 miles away from home with no oil - probably not a good idea

Standard oil put in was the 501.01 - a total of 1 litre.

I have an Halfords close by, but until I can figure out if I need 506.01 or 507 I'm not able to part with my hard earned.

Apparently my 05 TDI 140 doesnt have a DPF, not sure on the 06 though.

Check the codes stamped into your Service Book that came with the car.

Opie Oils do special offer deals from time to time so sign up for their e-mail, I use Fuchs oil which meets the specs you need and if you check the PDF tech specs found alongside each Fuchs oil you will find the one you need.

They had a discount weekend a few weeks back, which I missed out on due to family problems coming to the fore.

They did not put the sticker in the service book so I have no idea what the codes are....

Checking the "Service Due" on the maxi-dot now shows SERVICE NOW !

of to the dealers for some proper oil

Your car will be 506.1 as the PD140 doesn't have a DPF on the 06 models I saw.

Still now you need a service you can buy a bottle to keep in the boot at the same time :)

Can't believe that if i'd topped up with the pucker stuff it would have gone for another 10,000 miles..

I'm going to put some 506.01 in over the weekend and hopefully it will change its mind ?

ive noticed that a few people on here whove tried the button have had service now pop up (even on new cars). Mines done it since i got it and it was only at 6500 miles when i got it. not had any proper service indicators pop up on the dash and im now on 12500 miles.

let us know what the dealers say about the "service now" indicator if you do take it in ray

For the stiker with the codes try in the boot under the spare wheel

My 07 comes with no DPF

I think that the octy vrs and the superb have the DPF

Put oil vw 507 to cover both version :)

507 is indeed backwards compatible with any car that needs 506.1 etc, so if you are not sure whack some 507 in and the jobs a goodun.

I had a similar situation last weekend - the light came on, and I arrived at the local (to where I was working) Skoda dealer 5 minutes too late to buy any oil (despite them still being open, they wouldn't sell me any oil as the parts dept had shut).

So over the weekend:

I tried Halfords - nothing with 506 01 or 507 00, although plenty of 505 01

Then I tried a Shell garage - lots of similar oils, but nothing with 506 01 or 507 00

So, after driving to a different location on Monday I popped into the local (to there) Skoda dealer, and bought a litre of oil with the right spec on it. Yes it probably cost a few pounds more, but it was the right oil, and the car needed the whole litre too!

I run my octy diesel on longlife servicing (30000 miles service intervals) and a good tip is to buy a litre of the correct grade of top up oil from your dealer when you pick the car up from service. I pay about £12 for a litre (shell helix 0W-30). I also check the oil level each week and I have never had to put a lot in to bring the level up to the top, in fact a litre of top up is just about used in the 30000 miles. Checking the oil and topping up with the correct grade is less expensive than a wrecked engine! Also why quibble about the cost of a litre of top up oil. In 30000 miles it will cost you about £2250 in diesel (@55 mpg) so £12 in top up oil for the same mileage sounds cheap to me.

Try Oilman.co.uk there doing Fuchs TITAN GT1 for about

Speednut that name does not find the site, can you post the url link.

Opie Oils you mean?

Halfords sells Castrol Edge 5w-30 which is VW 504/VW507

Shell sells Helix VX which is VW504/VW507.

It makes no odds as the stuff is the best part of £15 if you buy one litre in a shop

Neither were marked as such in my local Halfords / Shell garage - they had those oils, but not with VW506 or VW507 written on them.
