Engine oil overfilled

My Octy 1.8T Auto has run perfectly for the 3 years I've owned it until this week, when its threatened to stall for a minute or 2 when cold. It seems fine when warmed up a little.

It was serviced a couple of weeks ago so tonight, wondering if the garage got something wrong, I checked the engine oil level and found it to be at least 1/2" overfull! Its not sitting 100% level so I'll move it and recheck in the morning, but I'm now wondering if that's the cause of the running problem?

The handbook suggests overfilled oil may cause some to enter the cylinders and contaminate the cat, but I worry damage may have been done to the seals.

Any advice - should I let the garage who overfilled it remove the excess oil and see how it goes, or should I demand there be more extensive checking?

go back to the garage an kick up. overfilled sump can cause just as much proplem as underfilled. wheres the excess oil goin if its as overfilled as u think? :(

Definately go back to the garage and get it sorted. Although its rare, over filling the sump puts extra strain on the engine gaskets and seals, and they can blow out dumping all your engine oil on the floor whilst the engine is running. Obviously dangerous for you and your engine, but also other people suddenly finding themselves on oil.

Its back in the garage. Apart from removing the excess I'm not sure what he should be checking?

It ran fine this morning but I worry about the possibility of internal minor damage which may shows up over time and be hard to pin on this incident. The hesitancy problem showed up worse when the car had been sitting the longer, i.e. 2-5 days since last driven.

Well, its back with the excess removed. No checks other than a test drive were reported, is this sufficient?

How long was it overfilled for?

It's most likely fine if it hasn't been for long.

And depends on how much it was over filled by. Min to Max on the dipstick is only about 1/2 litre.

cheezemonkhai, a couple of weeks but only 170miles. Mostly easy driving with one brisk drive.

Lummox, about 1-1.5cm over the Max marker.

The hesitancy has not returned so I'm hoping all is ok. The Mot is due soon so the emmisions will be checked and the health of the cat should be clarified.

If it's any consolation I had to dump a new engine into a fiesta I had bought for £50.

I knew it was knackered and was going to overhaul the existing lump as it wasn't running well and usually on 3 cylinders.

As it stood i found the entire think was full of oil and coke so put a recon lump in as it was a cheaper option.

The reason why was that even though the engine has a 3.5L ish capacity, the previous owner had had the change done by a friend and had just poured 5L of oil into the thing. :eek:

I swear It's amazing where oil can get when there is that much in there. The first sign that something was very wrong was a pool of oil in the carb, where it had made it up the breathers as a flow :eek:

By the sounds of it I would think you should be ok, but Ross knows infinitely more than me about that engine and I am just going from finger in air judgements of my previous experience with other cars.

Ok, well now I'm worried :worried: A mate of mine checked my car the other week and said the oil was overfilled, but i hadn't bothered to do anything about it :o Might go get it checked having read this..

I've just had mine serviced at a Skoda dealership and guess what when I checked the oil level it was just under 1cm overfilled :eek:

Rang the dealer for advice, saturday so no mechanics in :(. But the lady advised that the engine is filled by computers! Does she think I've just dropped from the sky?

Have done about 500 miles since overfill and hesitant to drive it, problem is the dealer is a 100 miles away so not sure what I should do :mad:.

Have decided, going to B&Q to get a pipe to syphone the excess oil out, will let you know how it goes...

told by AA that this caused a lot of problems on (think it was ) Isuzu TD engines on vauxhalls. Engine ran on at switch off- no fuel ,but got excess oil past rings - and eventually ran dry/blew up. Only happened when overfull.Any similarity ??
