noisy - and frankly rubbish- brakes!

Featured Replies

I have a 56 plate VRs and have done 6500 miles in it - and the brakes are terrible! It has been into the dealer 3 times for rear brake noise which is present all the time Modified parts have been fitted to the rear calipers and it still grumbles annoyingly.

My sisters 05 plate is a little noisy first thing in the morning, but it clears quickly once the surface corrosion is cleared. Mine is noisy all day!

Compared to the 05 plate the brakes are also terrible - long pedal and a 'will it, won't it stop' feeling. My sisters has a great pedal and braking is sharp and consistent.

Anyone else had problems with noise and efficiency? The dealer is doing the 'they are all like that sir' bit. Which clearly they are not!

Why not take your sis vRS in with you and say look this one brakes much better than that. Or test it yourself i.e. 30mph side by side and emergency brake if you pull up at roughly the same distance then its fine.

Or take it for an MOT which will check the braking efficiency - this will answer your questions.

Also could be the type of pads you have.

noisy rear brakes is a fairly common problem, but is usually resolved by carrying out a few emergency stops! However yours sounds a bit more serious to me. I've never had any problems with the brakes on my 05 VRS. I think I'd apply some more pressure on the dealer if I were you.

I suggested the side by side test at the dealers and they are too busy to fit me in while my sis is visiting me - she lives in Bedfordshire, I am on the Wirral.

I have measured the stopping distances this morning and hers pulls up quite a bit faster and shorter than mine. Dealer is going to do a roller check for me - I will apply more pressure!

After more testing hers is also a shed load punchier than mine - oh bum! Is this another ASZ/BLT issue!!!??

check out my reply in the stutter sticky thread...... I reccon they differ vastly from car to car.....

I have put a thread along this same problem myself. Bad squealing at low speed until you pull on the handbrake. I have a 56 Vrs with 6000 miles on it and it went in the first time for modifications and then a second time with the same problem which the garage decided to test drive for 50 miles and could not get the problem to occur although I did say that it does not do it it the rain and that day it was pouring all day.

Had enough of them doing it so took it back to the dealership i bought it from and they have replaced the brakes discs and 1 caliper and now seems fine for the time being anyway. The did also say the guard was quite close and may have been the problem as it only did it when the brakes were hot.

Mine are the same, noisy and absolutely no feel or sharpness at all..

When I got my '04 vRS I wasn't happy with the front brakes. Didn't inspire confidence at all. The dealer and the regional Skoda Tech agreed, and I got a new servo and master cylnder. That gave some improvement, but the brakes were still not what the car's power needed.

Then I washed the car one weekend and put it away instead of driving it after the wash. By next morning the discs were well rusted. Two applications of the brakes later, the glazing had been removed from the pads by the rust and the brakes were vastly better.

So try the water-splash treatment on yours: it's free and it might just work.

If that doesn't work, the 312mm conversion (Audi TT brakes) most certainly does!

Glazing of the brake pads is fairly common and occurs over time if the brakes are not used "properly". Might be worth find a quiet stretch of road and doing a few high speed stops to remove the glazing and see if that helps things....

i agree with this.....

I have this problem also. Right from day 1 up to present @ 13,000 , 06 plate.

Took all 4 wheels off this weekend glad i did as wheel nuts were seized on. (no chance of removing wheels after 12 months as nuts and alloy interact badly, anyway copperslipped them all so good to go when i get a puncture)

Back on track i have Lucas calipers, when wheel is off and you clean the black stuff off the green caliper. Made In Germany + Lucas are seen. Hope this helps.
