Callipers

Featured Replies

We've had problems with the brake callipers and the brakes have been engaging. This has been happening for a while and I had a different thread on this. The work has been done under warranty - discs and pads replaced but the garage has just reported that they have only over-hauled/cleaned the callipers which, quote, "for some reason were sticking on". Is this satisfactory or should I have new callipers?

Thanks for any advice.

ric, thanks. The garage mechanic says it was a seized calliper (happening intermittently) if that's any help. The pads were worn because the brakes were on (and off) when driving due to the callipers sticking. The condition worsened and the drag on the car at say 50 mph was very noticeable.

Was there any noise? I may have this problem on the rear discs of my 2.0i.

When they worsened to the extent that the braking was very significant, if moving at 40 mph with the clutch depressed or in neutral, there was sometimes a slight rough sound from the offending wheel area. But, it was convincing in itself.

I've contacted Customer Services and they will enquire on Monday as to whether an overhaul is the satisfactory remedy for seizing callipers.

Seizing after only twenty months?

The only occasions I have suffered sticking calipers was with cars nearly twenty YEARS old when the gaitors had split

Well that's what we were told yesterday by the Service Manager! I phoned today and he was not there. I was going to enquire as to whether Skoda's Warranty Department had refused the callipers. I was told something different by the technician. He said, "the pads had seized in the carriers and the callipers were fine. I will take this up on Monday as previously I was told the callipers had seized and had been over-hauled. The pads seizing was because of clogging with dust and muck - but I don't know where from.

Anyway, would someone be kind enough to say what 'pad seizing in carriers' is and is it a minor event or something more substantial

Thanks.

I am guessing here, but I think the calipers may be free to swing from side to side a little. They could seize this way. Then the pads are operated by pistons that could seize in the cylinders in the calipers. That is probably what he is referring to.
