20 meg cable con

Featured Replies

So if the 10meg folk are getting upgraded to 20.. what about the 4 meg people, do we go to 8?

Every network speed is measured in bits :)

Coo. Didn't know that.

Currently NTL:Telewest / Virgin Media are going through a big upsell / rebrand and a lot of the services are changing.

To answer some of the points made, some of the old CM's that were provided to NTL customers years ago will not handle the new speeds, if you are using one of the Samsung or the newer Blue Ambits you should be spot on.

The mentions of speed issues in these posts are odd - in sunny old newport where i live there are no issues with contention. Usually with NTL (and i would hope telewest area's) you get what you pay for, my 10MB connection will pull at 10MB all day long.

Wireless will slow you down with 54Mbps speeds being the norm and never reaching that, however the mention of the Pre-N wireless and also 108Mbps standards may well resolve that issue, but remember its all well and good getting a 108 router but if your card is only 54mb (as most are by standard) then you will not see the increase so worth checking.

Also speeds that are quoted on speed test sites and downloads from different places are not always a true reflection of your internet connection speed simply your connect to that server or web site, if there is something off the NTL network for example that is running slow that you have to travel through this will dictate your speed, a bottle neck as such.

But all in all 20MB should be fine, some telewest area's may have more trouble than NTL in the short term but i think this is being addressed.
