20 meg cable con

Featured Replies

Had a letter from the now named Virginmedia this week, advising that those on the XL cable con (10 meg, like me:D ) will soon recieve a doubling of download speed, with a

The older Surfbaud 3100 cable modems only had a 10mb ethernet port so you'll need that swapping out to go faster , and in practice they only tended to do about 8mb

I had mine done free of charge when I got upgraded from 4 to 10mb

i doubt if bt can match that yet!!! but to be fair i doubt if virginmedia can do it either, plus the contention ratio on cable is higher

Telewest were using 50:1 contention , same as nearly all domestic ADSL providers.

In practice , contention isn't an issue and I've almost always been able to get the full 10mb.

lucky..... i get a blistering 512k where i live

The difference, I find, is that I lived with 512K as that was what it was, so went off to put the kettle on. At the higher speeds, I find it infinitely more irritating when the line goes slow, or just drops out altogether. I have Plusnet and NTL so my sanity can be saved by switching across. Don't feel too badly done by, Tom. It could be worse ;)

Mine was likewise upgraded FOC although I was expecting to be charged £50. The advertised 10Mbps is 8.4Mbps at best for me, and 4.3Mbps right now.

A friend selling his Georgian house in London found a stream running about 1ft below his floorboards. Surveyor said it wasn't a problem; weird though. If you read the Google spoof about cabling via the sewage waterway, perhaps BT putting the cabling in via your friend's stream might be an option? Well, you never know...

Gonna have to switch it back to that line I suppose, see if it is not only fast but also stable... ;)

I'm on the 10meg connection, blagged a 3 month half price (2nd time I've had it) told them I'd go to sky!

First bill with virgin this month... $70... $60 for broadband... $10 cause I refuse to pay by DD as they always screw the bill up! Is it so hard for them to produce an accurate bill?

Mmmm. Sounds great, but if you are wireless in the house without being too technical, the WIFI would hold you back. So do your homework before upgrading.

2 meg connection here shared between 5 and ample for me. Limewire and other ports blocked on the routers.

the 'n' stuff is quick!

I noticed an advertisement on the telly about two days ago suggesting that you'd get 8MB. The words though said 8 Megabits. AFAIK there are 8 bits to a byte, so presumably they are selling 1MB. I think it was a Sky ad, but wouldn't like to swear to that.

Has anyone else seen it?

Just a note to be sure not to be taken in by MB vs Mb.

Every network speed is measured in bits :)
