'Throbbing/Lumpy' idle

Featured Replies

Hi Gents,

I drive a Jabba'd Black Octavia vRS. I bought it around Sept 2003 with 33K Miles on the clock (now has 46K!!). Thing is (and I'm NOT blaming Jabba, I don't remember if this was happening before the chip) the engine seems to 'throb' or pulsate when idling at light etc, and this sensation is not alway uniform, meaning that the pulse seems to happen randomly (e.g. 2 or 3 pulses every 4 seconds, nothing for 8 or 9 seconds, then a repeat etc).

Although I'm not getting any warning lights etc, the rough idling is a little worrying as I'm wondering if it might be the signs of a forthcoming engine issue. Maybe I'm being paranoid. I also notice that first thing when I start the car, the idle is VERY rough, giving me an erratic 'kangaroo' like drive for several minutes. I've seen a process using some facy alcohol, which I bought, to clean the MAF, which I'll try soon to clear up the idling issue.

Anyone have any other ideas? Is the above normal and curable?

Have the coil packs been changed? I ask because if you have the 'old' H type you could get them replaced FOC by a dealer. This would enable you to rule out a faulty coil pack as being a possible cause.

what clutch/flywheel are you runing... the ligfhtened/uprated itesm often cause lumpy idle?

Well, one of the coils went once and my dealer soughted it out. I'm not sure if they chaged all of them though, I'll have a look.

As for the flywheel, I'm unsure. My vRS was bog standard as far as I know (now chipped by Jabba), so it has whatever flywheel a 2002 Octavia vRs would have in it.

Thanks gents.

i have this problem with mine occasionally on a cold morning too, but mine is totally standard.

how do you tell if you have the 'old' H type coils? (might be a stupid question)

My Octy Vrs is off to the dealer on thursday anyway - just wondered if any of you lads could help first............

cheers!

PS Well done the BORO!!!!!

I had a similar problem with a vauxhall corsa, HT leads or something, but the problem was just like yours.

This may sound a little obvious, but has it just done this since Jabba. I swear that when (and I know its a diesel) TDI done at Jabba, the engine made a different, more burbley/lumpy noise at idle. Even my mates said it gave a different noise at tickover. It may seem obvious. Ignore me if this only started several K miles after Jabba'ing

Do you let the car warm up first thing or drive straight off?

If you drive off straight away the slight "jerkiness/roughness" is due to the VVT sorting itself out, I believe.

IIRC all 1.8T due this.....I let engine at least settle to below 1kprm before moving off.

Yep, I sometimes let the revs settle, but this isn't the issue I was concerned with. Basically, The car will un-evenly pulsate/throb/knock when I sit at lights, which could be after a 20 mile warm-up period. It is probably normal, but it does worry a little bit. It's probably a side effect of having driven a Vauxhall Cavalier before (always worried about when it was going to break down next  )

P.S. Someone asked about the coils, just get access to them under the cover and read the code back. If there is an H in them, get them changed :D

Rich,

my comments were aimed at Gilly's issue which is different to yours.

On your issue....may be it's the start of coil pack failure. I think you said your dealer already changed one coil pack...they really should have changed all of them...inline with Skoda Uks advice.

Have you the ability to check the error codes, if any, i.e. VAGCOM?

If you are concerned that perhaps it's due to the remap give Jabba a call....they'll only be too pleased to help and if it is a remap issue they'll sort it free of charge.

Skodi,

I'm probably worrying about nothing. Mike at Jabba was good to me when I first did the remap, and we did go out again in it (as, yes, it did feel a LOT different to me). I've done 10,000 mile since then, and i've always noticed this behaviour. I'll try a throttle reset and a Maf clean and see how I get on:).

Thanks

I do as a rule let the idle settle to below 1krpm, but thinking about it, yesterday i was late for work and got in and drove straight off........... i'll keep an eye on it for now, to see if sitting about for a while does make a difference. thanks for your help on this!!!
