Downpipe and sports-cat?

Featured Replies

Hi,

I am wondering what kind of gains I would get if I installed a new downpipe and sports-cat to my vRS standard exhaust. I would imagine that the flow should get better as the cat is less restrictive. I am also wondering what would this be a good option when getting a re-map to my furby?

Gains would be nothing to minimal. The noticeable effect would be the turbo spooling up quicker.

It would be a good idea to do this prior to a remap. It would be a good idea to do anything which will free up more BHP come remap time. :)

why waste your money on a sports cat. just de cat it.

I agree.

How exactly is this done and what are the costs ?

A Decat? There are pipes availiable but I am not sure where from or how much, there are users on here who will though.

You can get a custom straight through pipe made up and fitted which if you use the original downpipe will cost about

Would'nt the de-cat make it more difficult to get it through the emission tests?

And if I get the turbo to spool up faster I count it as a gain. Will it also help the engine to rev better? Since I now notice that the enging does not rev so well up to the limit.

Diesel's don't have emission tests. They have 'Smoke' tests. Not as much involved. Aslong as it's mapped accordingly and it doesn't smoke like a bugger. You've got nothing to worry about.

I got a Milltek de-cat from Awesome GTI and it came to around £150.

Lets the engine pull right to the red line a lot better. Yes it is a good thing if the turbo is spooling up faster, you get your power quicker.

And the turbo whistle is wicked.

Shaun L: Do you have it with a large bore sports exhaust or with the standard cat-back?

Got a Milltek cat-back

Doesn't a CAT have to be present as part of the MOT? If so, does it state that the CAT has to be FITTED... or can it just be in a box in the boot? ;)

i got a stainless steel exhaust system made up with a straight through pipe to take out the cat with a cobra back box and this only cost me £200. thats labour and everything!

No.

There is NO emmissions test. It's just a smoke test therefore the cat is not needed to pass the MOT.

Why would you want to put a cat in a box?

I mean I can just see the MOT testers face when you showed him this;

PMSL!!!! Very good!

De-cat pipes are easy to bolt on and off anyway, so you could always keep the cat and put it back on for the MOT if need be anyway ;)

Catalytic Converter that is, not an actual cat :P

I have a Miltek Sports downpipe and Cat but Would i gain Anything by changing to a FULL decat. I want the exhaust to be louder and iam guessing id get that. But How about power wise??

A few bhp (2-3) max if your lucky. You need to remap after decat to get the most. As mentioned i's just aout getting the turbo up quicker

will it spool even quicker then than my sports cat?? infact i know it will but will i be able to tell??

And i shall be remapping just wanting to get everything else done first. No point remapping then end all the other mods after.
