Car failed the MOT on saturday on a couple of things:

Outer CV boot split and one of the rear spring metal 'cups' had rotted away. (If you know the bit I mean)!

How hard/easy are both jobs to do?

Has anyone tried changing the CV boot without draining the transmission/removing driveshafts etc?

Time is of the essence as not got much time to get it sorted and in for a re-test.

(1995 Favorit GLXIE saloon).

The rear shocks are easy enough to change only a few bolts although sometimes these are seized up a bit. Would personally recommend doing htem as a pair and checking the state of the fronts as well, dont want them going whilst youre on the motorway, and it has happened.

I dont remember doing just a boot, normally Ive broken the joints themselves through out right abuse rather than a boot going and them going over time. Certainly been a few years if I have just changed a boot. You will at the very least have to take the hub end out and take off the stub, but cant remember for sure if that is easily doable.

Yep, the suspension is a doddle, and likewise its worth doing the pair. The spring cups rotting away is a very common problem on the Favorit.

Regarding the CV boot, depending on how long you intend to keep the car, I'd be half tempted to get one of those repair kits that has a boot larger than the existing one, where you simply pop it on over the top and fill with grease.

Thanks for the replies. The rear cups are being done as a pair. There didn't appear to be any problems with the front suspension but will double check. Need to replace both outer CV boots as one has split completely and the other is on its last legs.

Both rear suspension bits sorted and the 'failed' CV boot. Got my 12 month ticket this morning. Just need to do the other CV boot in the next few weeks.

If you know a local mechanic borrow his boot funnel it looks similar to an ordinary funnel that fits over the cv when the hub is removed the boot is sretched over it to save removing the shaft .
