oh insurance . . . .

Featured Replies

Well, I pick my vrs up on wednesday and i cant wait! but.....

The model I have gone for is an ex-demo with xenons fitted as an option, I saw a post by someone (cant remember who!) and it said that Admiral (who my policy is with) will not cover xenons like for like! I thought I best check with them and called them this evening.

Its just my luck that I got someone who couldn't understand the word xenon! I repeated it about 5 times before she understood what I meant, she also told me that because it was factory fitted it made no difference to my cover! Has anyone else heard this or have any ideas on what I should do? Am I really covered or was the woman just fobbing me off?!?

Cheers guys

John

official they are HIDs, not xenons as that is the name of the gas used. Also my Octavia has HID lamps fitted as an extra and Elephant (who are owned by Admiral) insure me with no problem.

Why not look in the policy documents online as surely that will give you the information you need to know, possible under exclusions

The point of insurance is to put you back into the same position as to prior to your loss. Therefore, in the case of a total loss of your vehicle, the PAV (pre-accident value) offered should take into consideration any optional extra's you have paid for. Anything other than this would need to be clearly stated in your policy documentation.

Also, if you have been advised verbally that you are covered, then the insurers have a legal obligation to indemnify you for any subsequent loss. So in short, you have nothing to worry about.

To be on the safe side, check your policy wording, if you're still in any doubt, request that they note on your policy that you have Xenon's and get a copy for your records. You are entitled to this.

HTH. Frost out.

I'd like to see that in some sort of writing, especially as the call centre person didn't seem to know what you were going on about! Insurers have a nasty experience of going back on their word, in my experience, over things like this. And strangely the call you had with them hasn't been recorded

should you declare factory fitted optional extras ?

Sounds very familier. I couldn't get them to understand about the lights and in the end they wanted to class them as a modification with standard replacement which obviously wouldn't work. Tried to explain but wasted my time.

You should declare all changes to the manufacturer's basic specification - after all it can greatly affect the cars value.

I told Bell that I had Xenons, CD changer, and cruise control, and they've put the Xenons under "external cosmetic changes".

Idiots.

should you declare factory fitted optional extras ?

I would as it means you have in writing the spec of your car, should they ever need to pay out for it. :D

Well, after spending around 30 minutes on the phone to admiral the other night they have said they will cover the lights. Both times I rung up I explained that the lights were a factory fitted option this seemed to confuse both the bloke and the woman on the other end who both listed my alarm and immobiliser as an option!?!?!

I explained that they were an option but Skoda had installed the system themselves (no modification by me) and they assured me they would be covered. I have asked them to confirm this in writing - just to be safe!!

What annoys me most is that these companies have people who cant understand simple options on cars (I know not everyone can understand every little thing about all the cars on the market) surely though basic knowledge as to whether a factory fitted option is covered is essential!?!

My insurance states that it will cover all factuary fit options with no extra charge and im with Churchill

I remember the fun explaining to Direct Line what options I had :D ESP seemed to really confuse them!

I think for peace of mind I actually sent them a copy of the invoice (prices removed ;)) detailing all the items incase they disputed anything if the unexpected happened.

does the big sticker in the manuals, state what it left the factory with ?

Think it does but I'm sure someone will confirm it in due course.
