Lack of engine braking - TFSI

Featured Replies

Hi

I've had mine a month today. I've noticed that there seems to be little if any engine braking and indeed sometimes when i take my foot off the accelerator the revs still go up slightly sometimes.

Is this related to the "splutter" I've read about elsewhere in the forum.

Is it to do with the Turbo (I don't remember this trait on the mk1)

Do they all do it?

I'm running it on V Power having had a few tankfuls of BP Ultimate.

Any suggestions please

It seems to be a trait with this engine but one I've got used to. With so much torque available I have adapted my driving style slighty as you don't need to rev the nuts off it to get the best out of it.

Agree with Makefish.

Mine doesn't like going over 4.5K sometimes when thrashing due to the f'in stutter I suffer from so badly. :(

Although WHEN it doesn't stutter the :( gets turned upside down :D

Thanks, guys. As long as i'm not alone!

I can't help thinking that this is something to be investigated and corrected. My vrs doesn't display this trait, only this morning I was musing as to why the car in front of me was braking (approaching a T Juntion Give Way) when all I had done was take my foot off the throttle and the gap between wasn't getting any less. I assumed that they were just feathering the brake pedal or maybe they were from the taught by numbers brigade and declutched early when coming towards a halt. Anyway it indicates that there is an engine braking effect, not of diesel proportions but engine braking yes.

What stutter

I searched under "surge" and it came up with the post "splutter is doing my head in" under Octavia section

Never noticed in my car?

What stutter

A trait of mapped cars with air intakes!. There is an issue where the engine starts to 'hestitate at around 5,000rpm in certain conditions although I have heard there may be a cure for it now.

Mine stuttered ......................... before the coil pack went up. Other than that, no stuttery problems on mine, with varying forms of induction used.

What model year is yours Tony?

MY06 or MY07?

What model year is yours Tony?

MY06 or MY07?

Mines a MY06 Harry, it's a year old in 2 weeks

Nice correlation beginning to appear here.

I can't say I have noticed a lack of engine braking myself.....but don't get me started on the cutting out issue.

If it's just the 'alternative map' cars that are affected I'd be questioning just how well written the map is. Seen plenty of alternatively mapped bikes that still run properly all through the rev range. That's supposed to be the art of the professional tuner, a remap that retains driveability.

Often means whole range of new values on bikes that have also altered some of the physical elements of the motor. In other cases the new map is just ironing out glitches in the power delivery that may have had to be engineered in by the factory to ensure emission compliance, possibly for a range of countries. Whichever you still retain driveability.

Interesting.. I've noticed something "odd" happen on the overrun. The exhaust note changes as though extra air is being injected, or the burn is made lean. I always thought it was something to do with the economy cycle of the TFSi. It too would contribute to the decreased engine braking you describe.

as i'm clearly not imagining it, I've tried to be a bit more scientific. as i can't really make notes and take my eye off the road for too long, i think:

It doesn't happen at all when it's not fully warmed up

Its worse between 2000 and 3000 revs

I've no knowledge of any kind on the topic but it would seem to indicate a fuel injection mapping situation - is it something to do with Euro pollution regs??

I'm also a bit confused by some of the comments. Did the mapping on these cars change at some point in the last 12 months and if so, why?
