New tyres needed - a reason for new alloys?

Featured Replies

I will need to replace the tyres on my 2002 1.9 TDI L&K shortly. As the alloys are blistering quite badly should I take the opportunity to replace them as well? All say yes now ;)

I live in Ireland but the car is an import from the UK - hence the blistering on the alloys I presume from the salt!

It's running 16's at the moment - should I go to 17's or stick with the standard size?

Also despite reading the various threads (or possibly because I read them) I'm confused as to what wheels I can fit i.e from what other VAG cars - any advice?

If your going to go up a wheel size then yes now would be a good time. There are plenty of companies who do wheel & tyre packages with tyres already mounted and balanced - so all you have to do is bolt them on.

Bear in mind, if you go upto 17"(or bigger) then the tyre profile will be lower - this will have the effect of stiffening the ride slightly - so if maximum comfort is important rather than looks stick with the 16"

Thats what i did when i needed some more tyres :D

Even the GF thought it was a justified reason

How bad a condition are your L&K alloys in? Are they all in a similiar condition?

Might be interested in buying them. Just depends how bad they are.

you will notice the difference with the 17"s on. :( not as smooth a ride but they do look good if you choose well.

17's here I come so! It's just a matter of spending the next week trying to decide what style to go for.
