Heavy Breathing Octavia Estate

Featured Replies

My '03 Estate makes an odd noise that can be heard in the cabin but seems a bit louder from the passenger seat.

The only way I can describe it is breating out through a hospital ventilator, except much much quieter and without the sucking in air noise.

Should it be doing this or is it getting a bit pervy on me? :o

Chris

Under acceleration? What model estate? Petrol or diesel?

:D :D

My 03/03 110TDi estate does this too, can hear it very plainly when idling.

It sounds like fluid and air being sucked up a tube,I don't have the aircon running so it shouldn't be related to that.

Mine is a 1.9 TDi 110 too. I can hear it clearly when sat idle with the engine running and it doesn't seem to get louder or quicker under accellearation.

Like you said it must be a pump of some kind. I wonder what it's pumping though to make that noise!

Resonance in the air filter housing?

Mine has a similar noise, thought it was the climate control as stops when switched off completely??

Could it be the Turbo by any chance ? ?? :)

When idling it would sounds like:

Hisssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

And when accelerating would be:

hiiiiiSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS *leave off the throttle* piffffffffffff

Its the climate control as my vrs does it.

It might need regassing??? As mine has got louder as the AC has got worse

Thanks everyone.

I'm going to try switching off the Climate control and see if that is where it's coming from. I'm hoping that a regassing wouln't cost mega $$$$$ (inevitably that means it will!)

If it's coming from the turbo should it be happening when idle? I've never seen a turbo'd with a noise coming from it when at a standstill. It sounds like a quite hissss [pause] hissss [pause] hissss [pause] and so on.

Chris

First thought was the air intake/recirculating dump valve, but if it is also at idle, that would rule it out. Climate control seems the next likely candidate...

Aircon regassing is around £50/60 mark but im not sure if that will stop it unless someone else can confirm this?

after a regas, the noise in my 1.8t Elegance reduced greatly.

Ta very much thats what i wanted to hear

I noticed in my local halfrauds they were doing a free aircon check

with a regass coming in at about

Nope you won't get a piffffff as the car doesn't dump excess boost to atmosphere but has a VNT turbo.

it is more like

idle:

idly noises

accelerating derv noise, then turbo spinny up whistle at about 1800-2krpm and when you lift of a sligh spin down.

I would suggest taking the lid off the air filter, putting a new one in for good measure as they only really last 10k IMHO and cleaning out any leaves, dead mice :D etc that you find in there.

To take it off there are two screws along the top edge then just twist it and rease the two lock in plastic bits at the bottom by pulling it towards the windscreen slightly. (You will see what i mean) You may want a rest of mole crips to remove the pipe too to make it easier.

HTH

I noticed in my local halfrauds they were doing a free aircon check

with a regass coming in at about £46 iirc

£85 at a dealer including check, clean (if needed) and re-gas etc
