Why would kids photograph numberplates...?

Featured Replies

Folks,

My 8 year old daughter just came in and said there were a couple of kids (looked age 10 or 11 to her eyes) photographing numberplates. She may well be mistaken, I didn't witness any activity, but why might young 'uns do such a thing?

Churs...

new way of collecting perhaps.. know as nippers we used to try to 'make up' stuff out of numbers/letters on a plate..

Wasn't there a thread running on Brisky late last year where some other people were spotted doing the same thing to cars?

I remember that thread. Can't in truth remember what the conclusions were. I recall there were several possibilites and that some weren't "innocent".

Please treat as a bump

Do you have a particular funny/odd/nice registration number? Maybe they are collecting pictures of funny/odd/nice registration numbers to post on the internet in a "Who's seen the best registration plate?" thread?

Maybe its the same thing as writing them down like when we were kids, just as they now have cameras that take digital pictures its alot quicker, I think it is innocent behaviour imo.

I have seen older kids taking pictures of reg plates around the area then coming back later to nick them.

If your plates are screwed and not taped on I'd keep an eye on them.

This is probably innocent, but if your plates do go walkies make sure you report i to the police.

The kids could be a working for a cloning operation. Gathering the intelligence for the crooks to make duplicate plats of similar cars (ie in colour and make etc)

As above. It sounds far fetched but working in forensics I've seen loads of mobile phones with stacks of licence plate number photographs on them. It was a popular way of avoiding congestion charging in London, and swapping information for availability of cars 'stolen to order'. Of course, it could also be completely innocent so, as they say on Crimewatch, don't have nightmares folks! I used to get loads of kids taking photographs of my Impreza plates until I started cracking a few heads and parking it out of sight! I've never seen it happen with the vRS, well . . . until the Police sent a few photos of the back of my car in the post.

Too much effort when you can just search on Autotrader for the exact car and colour!

True, although if you took a picture and got the address where the car was parked (assuming it was on a drive) you would have a bit more ammo, if the Police stopped you, e.g. you knew where the car was probably registered etc, only an idea. But if the cars weren

Good point re. the registered address.

I still believe a set of foreign plates is the way forward though. Plates with a little Euro flag and the initials PL, LV, LT, etc pretty much mean hassle free driving these days...

Could also be to see which cars are in which drives and at what time of day. IMO people do daft things when they're out - like close blinds or curtains etc (abnormally) so it's patently obviously they've gone away. Just another thought.

I remember when I was a lad I was on a flight somewhere and it was arranged for me to go see the cockpit whilst we were flying, I went in there and started snapping pictures of every dial and lever in the place :D Pilot explained that wasnt really allowed. Kids do strange stuff, with digital cameras I should imagine they take pictures of even more pointless stuff. What use did I possibly have for a load of pictures (that I still own) of plane cockpit. Of course I could have been a kid in the pay of a sinister terrorist organisation, but I wasnt I was just a kid doing whats kids do let loose with a new toy.

Aye, I remember that thread from a while back too. Last month some kids were taking photos of plates and the driver of the car infront lost his rag and got out to give em some stick

Talking of cameras folks - Petition to: scrap speed cameras.

This good cause needs lots more signatures - can you help???
