IHI engine internals.........HELP!!!

Featured Replies

To anyone here running with an IHI/Garrett set up.......

Are you running on standard internals?

If not what have you changed....pistons, rods etc. etc. if so what for?

I’m trying to ascertain whether it is worth up-rating the pistons or not i.e. going for low compression ones-such as Mahl high performance ones, or whether it will cause more problems than its worth i.e. too much engine lag?

Standard comp: 9.5:1

Audi S3 comp: 8.9:1

Mahl hi-perf.. comp: 8.5:1

I will certainly be upgrading my rods ASAP regardless of anything…..

HELP PLEASE!!!

Cheers:thumbup:

If you're changing the rods then you need to change pistons anyway really for ones with 20mm pins otherwise you will still have a weak point.

If you're changing rods and pistons then consider getting larger pistons and having the cylinders bored out. The extra capacity this gives will help reduce lag. Also if you are raising the limiter than uprated valves should be on your shopping list too.

I'm still on standard internals, sorry :/

with regards to choosing the right compression ratio..

it depends on a few things, mainly boost pressures??, which grade of fuel?? how good is your intercooler??

from personal experience i would avoid anything under 8.5:1 on a car that is going to used on the roads unless it'sa supercharged engine where i would suggest 8:1 as a minimum. but to be fair it does depend a lot of how the ecu has been mapped. if your compression ratio is too low you will b forever cursing about it when driving about town, aplus you loose a lot of the cruise/low rev economy too

have a look at Accralite Performance Forged Pistons Online for low comp pistons, these guys will even make custom ones to order for any engine, all you have to do is send the ma piston as a pattern, the off the shelf sets ost about £500

for H beam steel conrods i would try Arrow Precision Home Page i've bought rods from these geezers before and they knock em out at about £800 for a set of four... and i must say they are the dogs danglies!!!! far better than any other H beam rod i'e seen before, even better than omega rods

If you are in the 330 ish bhp area I believe std is fine

Jabba recomended to strengthen mine as we mapped it to just over 350 bhp & on The Cannonballs its subjected to long flat out runs beating all those rich boys toys. It also means the rev limiter can be safely raised further

As well as Gaskets & oil seals the following were on the parts list

Pauter Rods

S3 Pistons

Upgraded Exhaust valves

Bearings

New Head Bolts

& obviously Cambelt, Tensioner, Water Pump etc

Not wrong here. Previously my Octy was about as useless as the Mit Evo featured on Top Gear trying to out run the Fiat starting in 5th gear at about 30mph and failing miserably. That was with a KO4 equivalent turbo on a standard block. Now running with an IHI on a 2.0l capcity, it will happily accerelate from about 25mph in 5th (obivously albeit slowly at first). Previously the Oct literally did nothing regardless how much gas you gave the pedal at that sort of engine speed.

Maybe you should try and wreck your current engine (like me) to give you a justifiable reason to spend what will be lots of pennies on a upgraded rebuild. :D

My 1.8 with the IHI pulls very well, I think the IHI has a lot to do with the driveability

Get pauter rifle drilled rods to compliment your pistons. They are the only rod I know that provide pressurised oil feed to the small end bearing, like the standard rods. Many rod suppliers rely on oil splash to lubricate the small end bearing, but I found this to be insufficient. I got small end bearing knock off load with my first set of rods. Swapped to pauter rifle drilled and it was quiet as a mouse. Do it right first time and save yourself some money.

the 1.8t engine doesn't have internally drilled conrods because it has oil spray jets that spray the oil up into the back of the piston:confused:

It does, however with my block conversion, TSR had blanked these jets off because they fouled on the forged pistons (different dimensions or long sweep crank, not sure exact reason). Anyhow as pointed out above, oil splash was not seen as providing guaranteed satisfactory lubrication, so new spray jets were installed and the pistons were machined to prevent contact. Otherwise, yes drilled rods would have been required.

Off topic completely I know:rolleyes:, but, Leeboy can you make some space in your PM folder, i'm trying to send you one!!

Cheers;)
