Video of new gauge setup!

Featured Replies

Done a little clip of the gauge setup in my car now. I like where it's sat now - not the cleanest look, but perfect for eyeline, but not too distracting. Just need a vent for the "gap" left by the place the boost used to be. Sure I have something lying around. ;)

Well thats a nice well tailored set up on top of the dash there.

Almost looks factory fit.

Right down to the huge amount of wires going through the dash. Sure needs some cleaning up but today was just about getting them all in and working. I never expected to have to drain all the oil and coolant out, but looking back I think it was pretty essential. :D

Why would you need to drain the oil?

looks really serious - no messing about setup - function as well as form.

TBH I just don't like the wires on the side - would have been absolutely killer without them showing.

Good work Devon Dude!

The wiring will be hidden somehow - Probably just wrapped in something, but for now it's just "there" :D. The oil was drained so we could 1/8" tap the sump next to the sump plug. :) Seemed to be the most solid bit of metal (with oil behind) to bolt the sender.

Didn't fancy an a-pillar mount then? :P

I actually don't like A pillar mounts at all. Not sure why - I just don't like them, and the logistics of wiring etc.... [shudders]

Function over form for the minute mate.

Well, fair play to you. Certainly not OEM+ mind!

I'm just impressed you got them all working!! ;)

Took some doing. :D I wondered why the EGT gauge shot up to 980 degC when first turned on - then remembered removing an earth bolt in the engine bay, and it hadn't been connected (along with the new EGT control box alongside the erath  )

Got there in the end though - even tapped into a sidelight wire down by the lamp as the EGT gauge has a "dimming" feature which dulls it for night time driving. That's a really good feature.

Why would you want to know the temperature of the oil in the sump? Its going to be a fair bit lower than whats in the engine which is the important bit.

Ease really mate - I realise it's going to give colder readouts, and that's reflected in the temps which are around 80 degC after a good warm-up and on a bit of a run. I will have a benchmark now though. There seemed no other place to get a decent tap on the oil. If I ever see temps heading into the high 80s / 90s now, I know there's an issue. Same for the water. It's giving readouts of around 80 deg C on good runs too now - and I know that elsewhere, the temp might be higher. The bit we tapped for the water is just to the right of the engine block, about 12" (guess) before the oem sender - A short section of pipe about 6" was removed, cut in half - the metal bit was put in the middle, with the sender bolted in, and secured at each end with a small jubilee clip. :)

lost for words. honestly.

one question though if i may, why not get 3 gauges that match?

Pretty much impossible with the lack of choice on EGTs and as it was silver faced and the other two black, I put it in the middle. This isn't about aesthetics anyway. The EGT gauge came from USA, the spa double temp gauge came from the UK (best one out there for this job) and the racetech boost gauge has been in my car for ages (and I didn't like the other choices of gauge from them as much)

Makes a change for you to be speechless. ;)

:haha:

atleast you are pushing the boundaries on pikey mods :D

Had a freaky incident while car booting today - some foreign chap, I think Polish, came up to me after peering in the side window at my gauges (I was sat on the boot edge) and he asked about the gauges, and then asked for a look under the bonnet. :D I couldn't help checking to see if it was a distraction thing, but he was genuinely interested in the tuning I'd done.... I always thought these foreigners were crazy....

he's probably planning on doing the same to his hyndai accent or something.

I fancy a couple of those SPA gauges but damn they're expensive for the boost/EGT ones.

 Once I saw the price I was like "F*** THAT!" I did lash out

Looks good  although it won't be oem-stealthy-like until you get a replacement vent thingy :P

They look very knight Rider! I like them but I reckon I could do with EGT, Boost, Oil Temp and maybe Oil pressure. Just 2 normal sized gauges would suit best and I want to buy gauges from the same range for aesthetic reasons. Hmm, I'll keep looking and have a think about where I can mount them, having thought about it recently I've gone off the idea of an a pillar pod setup.

Where would you put the sender then? As far as I know the sump is part of the engine, the part of the engine where hot oil returns to and the oil pump picks it up again. I can't see anywhere else to put the sender other than maybe filter housing which be exactly the same temp as the sump oil and a lot harder to fix the sender in.

 finding some decent metal to put a 1/8" tap in was the issue really.
