Towing electrics - confirmation lamp in speedo

Featured Replies

My Dad's Octy Estate has the proper skoda towing bar and electrics ( or at least that is what we paid for ). Works fine BUT there is no light in the dash that the indicators work on the trailer ( they do )

According to the manual there should be a second indication in the speedo to show correct function of the indicators whenever a trailer is connected.

The tow bar and electrics were fitted by the dealer ( in Sep 2003 ) so the car is out of warranty and we do not wish to pay £XXX just to have an indication when a retrofit buzzer costs £5.

But it could just be that they did not program the instrument panel to listen to the towing relay ????

I have a VAG-COM. Can anyone tell me what the coding should be for the instruments to listen to the towing relay ?

The instruments are without the maxidot display.

Thanks in advance for any help

Depends on the age of the car but I believe that in around 2001 they switched to the system where by the indicator flahses double speed if there is a bulb out on the trailer, same as on the car. This is certainly how my 2004 works.

are you using 7 or 13pin electrics in your trailer?

Thats how it is..stupid eh?

My 98 plate Octy had a trailer indicator in the dash, the Superb is 03 and that only flashes double speed when trailer lights fail. I cannot see for the life of me how having a warning only on failure is better than warning when trailer connected and in use.

I have taken this up with my dealer and Skoda, and that stupidly is how it is...and both my tow bar and electrics were Skoda supplied.

Pros and cons either way. You know its definitley working if there is a light and that the connection hasnt fell out, however, by using the standard alert you get the double flashing and clicking of the relay rather than looking to see if the light is on.

Modern simplicity of control systems dictates only alert when something is wrong, hence blank dash is all good.

It has the 13 pins ( black plug and grey plug )
