Fitting a boost Gauge

Featured Replies

Hi.... looking for some advice/help on fitting a boost gauge..... from searching around here it seems that it is not the same as a petrol engine.... i.e. using a T piece but instead you need to tap into intercooler hose

Could someone provide a pic/description of the pipe I need to tap into and whether there is a specific part/kit needed to tap the pipe..... as I say, tried searching but most of the threads are old and pics have been removed :( Any help would be appreciated...... dain't want to knack up the car like :D

Thanks

If you were to fit Allard's EGR replacing pipe, it comes with a nipple you can tap for a boost pipe. Otherwise you need to get some form of tapping kit. For my first gauge install (pre-EGR pipe) I drilled a hole in the manifold about 8mm wide, then used an 8mm bolt with a small nipple on the end to attach the boost pipe. Then you could run this into the cabin from behind the glovebox. :)

Cheers.... looking on TDIclub.com, some suggest it is possible to tap into the lower intercooler pipe or the wastegate bypass regulator valve (N75)..... is this something that is possible with the fabia..... looking at the hoses that enter the vacuum control block.... the one going to the charge pressue control vacuum unit?!?

New to gauges on TDI's so not sure the options available and the reasons why some are not possible or recommended and why

Thanks for your help.....

oh..... I presume you mean the exhaust manifold?!?..... and if you don't mind me asking, how much was the Allard's EGR replacing pipe,,, thanks

I wouldn't use the N75 vacuum pipes. You need to either tap the manifold directly (metal is always good for boost taps) or use a bit of the plastic (the tough plastic) bits on the boost piping from the intercooler to the manifold.

Finding a good place to mount the gauge is hard enough too. Fabia cabin is not condusive to gauges.

Thanks.... I know what ya mean about finding somewhere inside to place the mount..... having a good look around at all options..... don't fancy loosing an airvent to house one!!

Just so I know why...... why is it a bad idea to use the wastegate pipe/N75 vacuum pipes...... is it to do with how accurate the readings are or does it cause problems elsewhere..... thanks

Just the pipes are so soft and narrow. Plus they control stuff like the boost, so I would never mess with them. I would say drill the manifold, but it depends how long you want to keep the car.

oh I will be keeping for quite a while :D it is turning into a bit of a project :D

Inlet manifold not exhaust manifold. No boost in the exhaust ;)

Is there specific kit for tapping into the manifold!?!?!? ta

Big drill bit just a "bit" narrower than the thread needed. So for a 1/8" thread, I think the best drill bit to use would be a 3mm one. Then use a 1/8" tap set to make yourself a 1/8" thread, and then screw in your boost fitting. Easy peezy (with the right equpiment)

And yes, do not drill the exhaust manifold. It will get a bit sooty in the engine bay. :D;)

The engine bay is bad enough to keep clean without it being soot sprayed :D

Thanks again for your help with this.... cheers
