Steering Vibration when accelerating/braking

Featured Replies

Hi All,

If anyone could help me with a problem I'd be really grateful. I've got a Silver 2003 VRs, not modified in any way, with 70k on the clock. I'm getting a fairly strong vibration through the steering, but only when accelerating at fairly low revs in a high gear, say from 70mph in 6th. Over about 90mph it goes away. Running at a constant speed there is no vibration, unless going uphill when again the engine is under load. Also, I get the same vibration sometimes when braking.

I don't think it's wheel balance (because it's only there when engine under load), and I've rotated the tyres and had new ones on the back anyway. All the typres have less than 5k on them and look OK. My local Skoda dealer couldn't find anything wrong, although they have pointed out that the brake disks are all corroded around the edges so maybe that's something to do with it?

Anyway, any advice would be welcome, because at the moment it's spoiling my fun a bit! :D It's taking the edge off surprising BMWs on the dual carriageway.

Cheers!

that's not the dreaded DMF problem showing up again is it??

that's not the dreaded DMF problem showing up again is it??

sounds like it too me also , or excessive play somewhere in the driveline , but i would of expected a Skoda garage to have found that

Could be remapped and the extra torque is showing itself with DMF shudder when you place the car under load.

Wouldn`t worry about it to be honest.

My 2004 vRS does exactly this!!!!

I'm taking mine in to be looked at, tyres are only 6 or 7k old.

I'll keep watchinh this and update if they find anything.

I had a similar sounding problem recently of vibration through the steering wheel and ignored some peoples first suggestions of a tyre probem.

Had convinced myself it was somenthing more serious but sure enough one of the front tyres turned out to be mis-shaped. :o

New fronts and the vibration went.

Thanks for suggestions everyone. I hadn't heard about DMF problems, but I would have thought you'd have felt the vibrations not just through the steering? And why would that give me vibrations when braking? I don't think the car is remapped: I bought it approved used off a Skoda dealer and I don't think it's got the performance. 0-60 around 9 seconds from a couple of standing starts a while ago - better than the official stats but not the sort of figures I've seen on this board for remapped VRs's.

I'm replacing the disks soon, so if that helps or if I find out what the problem is I'll post here.

Cheers

If it is the DMF at least the 1.9 TDI can have a single mass conversion done :)

Hi Guys, I am experiencing similar. When accelerating at speed (motorways etc) i get a fairly heavy shake on mine also. At first i thought it was a dodgy road or something but it is happening more and more. Tires seem fine, pressure is Ok and there is no wobble or pull at any other times to suggest a tracking or balencing issues (altho i am going to get this checked out).

I have heard this DMF issue mentioned several times prior, can someone expand on this for me.

Thanks.

read this thread , it has some interesting links about DMF operation

Update on this issue: I've been back to the Skoda garage and they've told me the bushes for mounting the front ARB are cracked leading to vibration in steering when accelerating and braking (which is what I've seen). They've quoted

I had a similar problem, well the acceleration at m/way speeds anyway. This has now disappeared, following new bushes on the front wishbone (solid Ibiza Cupra rears, Powerflex fronts).

I still have a little bit of high-speed vibration, which is now more noticeable, which I think is due to a wheel balancing issue in my case.

It perhaps sounds right for you though, with the above diagnosis, because I had no problems with lower speed acceleration. I do know the front ARB can be a weak point on the Fabia, I think there's a sticky from Ross about it.

Does seem fairly pricey that, but unfortunately I don't know how much the parts are, or how long it would take them! :o

Front anti-roll bar faults and console bushes split are common , i've just done mine on my 04 VRS

Well, PROBLEM SOLVED! I went to a local mechanic for a second opinion. He told me that what the Skoda garage had said was wrong, and in fact the front ARB bushes were fine, and so was the ARB. But he spotted that the drivers side front wishbone bush was split, so replaced that and the car drives perfectly now. As good as new, smooth at all revs, no vibration.

So I'm glad I didn't just do what Skoda told me, cos I'd have been

Having driven vibration-free again for a few days I've rediscovered what a great car the VRs is. Sort of a stealth machine: people don't expect much from a liitle Skoda but when you put your foot down it goes like ****. I surprised a bloke in an Aston Martin last night: what a beautiful feeling!

Surprised him, in that he was surprised you were even trying it on against an Aston? Next fabia owners will be saying it can 'have' and M3 ;)

I had all this discussion 1 month ago. Had 2 balances and a four wheel allignment. Turns out my wheels were buckled and was not the DMF or the console bushes.

I had exactly the same symptoms.
