A 1.4 8 Valve Fabia?

Featured Replies

Hiya all bought a fabia earlier from a skoda dealers was told its a 1.4 8v but i just checked the registration up and its showing up as a 16v?

Is there actually a 1.4 8v? and if not any idea what insurance group a 16v is?

100Bhp would be hella-nice but think it would cost me a million!

Cheers

please feel free to correct me if i wrong but the earlier fabias like the polo came with a 1.4 8v mpi engine and the later one with a 1.4 16v 75bhp and a 1.4 16v 100bhp version?

might be that u have a 75bhp version?

The 1.4 8v MPi engine is a Skoda engine (not used by VW)

The 1.4 16v (100bhp and 75bhp) are the same as the Polo/Ibiza/A2 units and have a built in airbox/engine cover.

If the car came with a handbook compare the engine bay to the pictures in there. If it didn't try posting a picture as there's more than a few people who will know the difference.

If you look under the carpet in the boot I think you'll find the options listing which may have the engine power in KW. I think the 8v was around 50KW while the 16v (100BHP) was around 75KW.

Where did you check the registration, my old 8v used to show up as a 16v on car data check websites. I phoned the DVLA in the end who confirmed with me that they had it down as a 8v.

If you can go with the 16v anyway, you will get more MPG out of it

What year was it registered? (that might give an idea as to which it is)

Don't know the engine code off the top of my head, by 50kW = 68bhp, which is the output of the 1.4 8v MPi engine, which is a push-rod design that uses a short chain to drive the pushrods. If you're still not sure the engine cover ought to look like this:

cts1.jpg

And if you're still not sure, take off the engine cover, and what's underneath should look like this:

cts2.jpg

(Ignore the arrows and circles - they're 'cos the pictures come from something else I did!)

You're correct in thinking the 1.4 8v is chain driven. It's not a chain cam engine per se, because it's actually a push-rod unit, with the push-rods being operated by a short chain. To the best of my knowledge, the chain should last as long as the engine, although it might get a bit rattly later in life. Shouldn't break, though!

My wife has a 1.4 MPi - cracking little engine for what she uses the car for. Fuel economy and overall power output aren't not great by modern standards, admittedly, but being an 8v unit it's relatively torquey, so doesn't struggle too much when the car's 4-up or the boot's full!

Enjoy your new car! :)

its definetly a 1.4 16V MPI engine which i find confusing as with it being a 50Kw version its definetly nippy enough almost supercar like compared to the previous 1 pint v8 lupo :)

If its 50KW then its 8V , that is 68PS and is the 1.4 MPi 8V. Does it mention 16v on the engine cover? If it just says '1.4 MPI' then its an 8v engine , also check the badge on the back under the Fabia badge , if it is 8V it will just say '1.4 MPI' again , the 16v engine has '1.4 16V' badges (with a red 16V denoting the 100PS one , IIRC).

HTH.

I think the engine code is ATZ , not 100% certain.

Yea i bought my fabia 1.4 mpi (8v) a couple of months back and when i was gettin quotes on it, some websites came back at 16v, but its not :P must just be an error with the systems for some reason :P

50kw = 75hp 16v auto?

50kw = 75hp 16v auto?

1HP = 745.6999 W so 50kW = 67hp.

Guess its got to be a glitch on paperwork a pretty big one really I would of thought

It might be as well checking with DVLA like Skodayouth did, just to be on the safe side... Both engines have their good points and bad points, so I wouldn't necessarily feel put-out from having the 8v rather than the 16v. Then again, I'd hate for your insurance to withhold payment on a technicality like the engine details of something bad happened - probably best to get it sorted...
