Turbo Diesel - without the Turbo!

Featured Replies

My Octavia 1.9 TDI is poorly! I suspect the Turbo is not Turboing. The engine starts and runs fine and when up to speed the car drives along quite happily (until reaching uphill stretch when it slows rapidly). If I have to slow down (for junctions, roundabouts etc) the car is very slow to pick up speed again ( embarrassing when you get overtaken by the lorries and vans that you've just passed!). After a recent service, I was advised that the fault was probably with the "airflow meter" which apparently is not an uncommon fault with Octavias of same year. I was quoted

Do a search on Mercedes MAFs, mucho cheapness. Added benefit is that it goes better too :D

I know Audi and VW's with same engine should have compatible parts but I don't have the specifications or part no. to do a search. What is Mercedes MAF? Excuse my ignorance.

A MAF (Mass AirFlow meter) is the part you're trying to replace. Mercedes make a MAF which is almost compatible with the VAG unit, but causes a little bit of over fuelling and hence the increase in performance. As Jon said, do a search and all will be revealed ;)

I needed a new turbo which I was able to get under warranty - Mine was more a pooting along fine, then CLICK - no turbo! :( -a frustrating month that was... (but never had anything else as bad)

My own octavia, (1.9TDI 90BHP), seems to be suffering from the same problem.

I did a search on the forums for Mercedes MAF, but there's no indication of the right part to get? I'd rather try 35 quid than 300 to see if it sorts out the problem...

IIRC, do a search in the UK Mark IV site as few of the guys there have the Merc MAF.

HTH.

air flow meter / air mass is located in the air filter housing. electrical plug with about 5/6 wires going to it. can be checked out using measuring value blocks and a short road test. use vag.com software. dave

MAF meter went down in my Octy TDI. Symptom with mine was that it would not pull more than 3000 revs. Seemed to work fine upto that speed. The up side was that I could get 60 mpg easy because of this.

Skoda hand held computer will tell you straight away if the MAF is down

Geoff.
