Snapped suspension...latest epic!

Featured Replies

Hey, just wanted to rant about my latest epic as it has scarred me a little bit and I wondered if it had happened to anyone else.

I went to get my tyres checked, as you do every now and then, and it turns out my front passenger suspension had snapped and worn a nice groove all round the tyre. Not normal behaviour for a Skoda?!!It was a bit worrying cos I'd just drived 200 miles with it like that, and even more worrying that it didn't make any noises, smells or drive any differently, no pulling or anything. Very odd.

Anyway, it's quite embarrassing but also I'm relieved it didn't decide to blow up on the A1 yesterday.

It's being fixed now though only because it was cheaper than scrapping it!

it's quite common for the front suspension struts to collapse on a felicia

it's fairly well documented throughout this site

Ah that makes me feel much better! I'm not the only one afterall!!

Decides *REALLY MUST REMEMBER TO CHECK THE CUPS ON WOODIE*

me or the car??

anyway back on topic.

Glad nothing happened skodapenguin:thumbup:

hi skodapenguine, is it just me or have you not been on hear for a bit?

anyhoo, glad to hear no harm came to any one. did the strut snap, or the cup that hold the springs???

the cups are v-commen if not checked. there should be a lil dranage hole in the cup, just make sure it ent clogger.

the cups rusted through on the back of my fav estate once. not nice to find the a$$ end of you car on the floor, trailing sparks all over your fuel tank.

hope you dont have any more mis-haps.

hello pinkskud, no not been on for a while, I've been writing a dissertation which has eaten up most of the last 5 weeks!! Yeh the strut snapped. Having two new ones fitted now. Definately something for me to check in future.

Thanks for the advice and nice words. I got really upset when the man who towed it away kept asking 'how did you not know?'. It annoyed me cos I'm usually very good at noticing the slightest thing wrong with it.

Thanks for the heads up. Next time my sister is down I'll have a look at her shocks, they should be ok as the car has just been serviced but I'm guessing its not something that would necessarily be picked up unless specifically looking for it.

I must have driven a few miles with my collapsed front suspension, it handled fine, i remember a crunch going over a speed bump the night before and thought i'd run over something but couldn't spot anything obvious, next day going to work i could hear a whirring sound, thought it was a wheel bearing, spotted the cup resting on the tyre later on, strangely the suspension seemed to still work ok and the car sat at the correct height. It did rub a small groove in the tyre and in the daylight you could see it smoking but the tyre wasn't ruined.

same happened to me, the cup had rusted and the suspension collapsed, drove for at least 15 mile before I arrived home and noticed it. I'm suprised i didnt have a blowout when I saw how deep the groove was in the tire!!

Good old skodas then!! There seems to have been several cases of them still moving and not blowing up, even with the suspension resting on the tyre, most obliging! Mine went 200 miles and I cannot believe it didn't explode...nor could the garage man, the break down man, the man my mother lives with or the mechanic who fixed it!
