Replacement tyre: some advice please

Featured Replies

Got a puncture today, NSF tyre, can't be repaired so will have to be replaced:(

The tyres have only done 10,000 so the other side still has plenty of life left in it. Trouble is, even if I replace it with the same type (which I plan to do), the tread wear will be uneven between the two tyres. If all 5 wheels were of the same type, I would simply swap the OSF wheel with the spare, but I have alloys and a steel spare so it's not quite so simple. Is it worth swapping the part worn front tyre with the one on the steel spare, should I swap the unequal tyres with the rears, or am I worrying about nothing?

Personaly I think that you are worrying about nothing, especially as your car is 2 wheel drive. Moving the uneven combination to the rear just goes against current thinking - seems like over the past few years that rears are more important than fronts - I'm just quoting what seems to be current reasoning from the general tyre trade. One other solution would be to remove and store the part worn OSF tyre - for future use, and buy a pair of new tyres - fitting them where either you or the tyre trade think makes best sense.

Another thing that's just occurred to me is what is the correct way to lift a Fabia with a trolley jack? The last time I left my old Felicia with a tyre place they badly damaged the vertical seams under the sills with their jack. I don't want a repeat of that scenario with the new car!

Watch em - Kwik Fit damaged mine - they shouldn't jack it on the sills at all. There are proper jacking points underneath.

If there's a big difference in tread depth, then I would personally either replace both fronts, or get them to put the part worn onto the spare and then the spare and a new on on the front of the car. I'm not a big fan of the "new tyres on the back" policy - if it all goes t1ts up, I want to know that the wheels which are capable of steering and putting power down are the ones most likely to have grip :D But that's an argument for a different thread ;)

Chris

I'd just put the spare tyre on the alloy and get a cheap tyre for the spare.

I'd just put the spare tyre on the alloy and get a cheap tyre for the spare.

That's what I would do to (assuming the spare is the same spec tyre?).

are you comming to the brisky BBQ? I have two part worn tyres I intend to give to the auction :) may get 'em

I would also be tempted to put spare on and get replacement for spare. maybe even swap front for back so new on back and nearly new on front.
