So, what's my prize!?!

looks like an alfa/fiat to me??

yup, a broken timing belt is a serious thing - and result not only in camshaft damage - your trousers can fall down too.......

I'm gonna say Renault.........

Chris

Golf GTI

Yep thats broken...

I will say golf GTI ;)

EDIT (Yes i changed my mind :P)

Or was it from his wife's Golf GTI? :D

They need to get an MX5... It's a non-interference engine so no problems if the belt goes!

a couple of pics from work

the first 2 are from a new Focus , and the other 2 from a Transit , needless to say they both required new motors

nope! the 16v golfs have a combustion chamber which is an odd shape which i'd know anywhere:O the exhaust valves aren't canted like they are on this head:P

i'm still going with alfa T-spark

if you look very carefully at the picture you can see where the extra spark plugs go(i think:confused: ) red arrows

and the blue arrow is the water pump which is on the end of the cylinder head

head.jpg

believe it or not, that cylinder head could be repaired... i've repaired heads in much worse condition than that...

or have i got the wrong end of the stick:O looks very similar to the peugeot/citroen XU10J4 too

afterthought: besides, wouldn't renault engine have wet liners???

and that cylinder block could be repaired also... but the labour cost is getting too high!! cheaper to find a low milage breaker

Must confess, I just found the picture by Googling for knackered engines. :o Dunno about where that cam came from in your original post, but this pic pretty much clears up that it's a T-Spark (the 2nd spark plug is pretty obvious in the left-hand combustion chamber!)

Plus, the engine was described as being from a 'sporty saloon' if you needed any more confirmation!!!

So I think you should award yourself the prize that you weren't really going to award anyway! ;):D

I think there's a bit of confusion on this thread as everyone is guessing (including the person who asked the original question ). I think me and Mark were guessing your next door neighbour's car which you asked about in the first post ;)

Excellent - will you deliver or do I have to collect? (you're the guy on the right aren't you? ;))

Chris

Ohh a tddi or tdci and an endura.

If it's the latter then best that he didn't change it!

seen quite a few of those bits over the past 15 years , sometimes its just bent valves , then it could be valves and a couple of breaks in the cam , but the worst is when it cracks the cam caps , then its curtains for the head unless you throw a great deal of money at it :(

here's a little tip for you to get you out of trouble when that happens..

for those who dont know, those cylinder heads are made of cast iron and they have trimetal bearings for the camshaft like your crankshaft has... find another camshaft bearer cap from a scrapper, then drill through the hole which locates on the mounting studs with a 8.5mm drill bit... refit the upper bearing shell and it will fit first time!! without any line boring required:eek: i've done loads of these like this.

the worst thing about these heads is that they dont have valve guides, the valves just sit into holes which are drilled straight into the cast iron... if the bent valve cracks this area, although it can be fixed by fitting a sleeve, dont bother!!! find a new head
