How much oil do I need?

Featured Replies

I'm taking my Octavia mark II vRS for its first servicing next week. Since they will be draining and changing the oil filter I would like to take my own oil for them to replace it with and reduce the cost.

How much oil does the empty engine require me to give them?

When I change the oil in my TFSI RS it takes 4.3 litres with the filter change.

4.5 litres is the official capacity iirc which begs the question as to why the oil companies insist on selling the stuff in 4 litre cans  :(

Many times dealers get the oil much cheaper than you would, plus either way you have to pay them for environmental disposal tax.

Are you intending on using a really high grade stuff that the garage won't use? That's the only advantage I can see to bringing your own oil. Personally I check the oil they'll be using, and the last few cars have stipulated which oil I want - Magnatex. Always worked out cheaper than sourcing myself.

The garage use Shell Helix VW 504/VW507 around my way, which is pretty much as good as you will get.

Can't see any reason to use your own unless you can get a reduction on the price significantly greater than you are paying for decent oil.

Some interesting thoughts guys. I use (and will be providing) Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30 Longlife Oil which I bought a few months back.

At the time I paid

I'm sure someone who's been serviced recently can give you a guide as to oil prices paid.

Sorry I can't help, but last 3 cars have been leased through Lex - so I never see a bill (included in monthly payment, along wth tax).

Yes the dealer said they would need 5 litres. At the garage I'm going to get it serviced (Ashmore Green, Newbury) they use Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 so if I can get that I'll bring it along.

Do you think it will be a problem to mix oils after the servicing i.e they use Mobil 1 ESP and I add Shell Helix X to top it up every few thousand miles?

With these modern synthetic oils it is best not to mix different makes. The Skoda dealers I have used supply the shell helix 0W-30 and that is what I use for top up. If the garage supply Mobil I would prefer to top up with Mobil.

On an Octy I TDI I had that Mobil 1 used and got 27k between services.

Topped it up with some Esso stuff that was VW506.1 and no problems :)

I have just had an oil change on my 2.0TDI - had to put the "non" long life oil as an emergancy.

The dipstick tested the viscosity and spat out a "service now" message on the maxi-dot display.

The car had only done 5k and is only 8 months old so I knew it was to do with putting different type of oil in

I think you will be ok mixing oil manufacturers, just not types - unless you want the car to request a service shortly after mixing...

Oh and to finish it off that cost
