Featured Replies

I had the already amazing Vision Plus fitted which were 50% brighter than std but these Xtremes 80% are just awsome, theres so much white light and atleast another 20ft on dipped 50ft on full of white usable light than even the vision plus had, it makes up for

What's the lifespan like on these bulbs? After a few months are they going to lose their wow factor?

Ive been using the philips extreme purchased from powerbulbs for about two or so months now and i agree they are brilliant

Ive used the 50% extra bulbs many times before and not noticed that much difference in the light emitted but the extreme`s you really do notice

There was no info i could find on the expected lifespan of these bulbs but i would expect them to be of similar lifespan as a regular H4/H7 headlight

as they dont use any more power or burn hotter its all in the way they are made

All i can say is after two months mine are still as bright as when i fitted them but its probably not long enough yet to be able to say for sure whether

they will dim significantly over time

I thought they specifically burned hotter to give you the extra light, but the gas mixture is changed to stop it burning out.

I know the casing is certainly smaller on the Xtreme 80% than on standard bulbs.

I have been thinking of getting these, and have read up on them.

they get the extra bright ness but increasing the pressure of the inert gas (one of the rare haloogen gasses) in the lamp but quite a bit.

so the tungsten fliment can burn at a higher temp.

they might produce a little more heat but not to the level of an 80w or 100w lamp.

Been thinking about a set of these too - However the removal of the lamp unit to replace them seems a little drastic...

If you own octy 1 they are the easiest bulbs youll ever change not hard at all.

As for the lifspan, rep says they're is no noticable decrease in life from std phillips h4 bulb. The quarts glass they use has something to do with it aswell but cant remember everything he said.

If your thinking of buying then dont hesitate they are just awesome:thumbup:

Its a Octy II...... so removal of the whole unit is needed.

Can someone tell me if I need to get H4 or H7 as I can't be bothered to walk down to the office car park !

Andy2407 posted a useful 'How To' HERE. H1 Main Beam & H7 Dipped Beam

Good luck tracking down the Xtreme's in H7 fitment! Seem to be in very short supply at the moment, although Power Bulbs will happily take your money now and ship them when they have some in stock!

Chris

Damn you, Steve! :P Ordered mine on Sunday and getting impatient now. Hopefully they'll arrive tomorrow or I'll be cancelling my order and buying those!

Chris

Sorry mate, but thanks for the heads up on them anyway :D

Cheaper as well, just to rub it in!! It does say end of May on PowerBulbs, so probably time to cancel?

Steve

May I ask another stupid question..... and I haven't get Xenons

Looking at the guide Andy2407 posted I need both H1 and H7 ?

I thought:

one single bulb w5w did sidelight (first position on light wheel)

one single bulb did both dipped (second position on light wheel) and main beam (push indicator stalk)

Therefore two bulbs in the headlight unit in total

However, Andy2407 replaced both H1 and H7 so are the dipped and main two seperate bulbs?

Therefore, 3 bulbs in the headlight unit in total?

That's correct, the Octy2 uses an H7 bulb for dipped and a separate H1 bulb for main (full) beam.

HTH,

Steve

Chris

Just to make it worse Chris - mine arrived this morning. Superb service

Sorry, I'll be quiet now :P

Steve

Can anyone post a side by side comparison - before and after ?

Has anyone else replaced the w5w sidelight bukbs?

I am happy to spend the money of new bulbs - I just hate being dissapointed.

It does say end of May on PowerBulbs, so probably time to cancel?

Didn't order them from PowerBulbs as they said end of May so ordered some from another supplier who said they were in stock. Shame they're so efficient at taking money and so fecking useless at delivering them

Chris

Powerbulbs usually give the Philips sidelights away with any order. I replaced mine but can't really tell the difference :D

Chris

Comparison - can do, will try to fit them tomorrow if I have time, but it's going to be a busy detailing day if the weather holds, so might not have time :)

The comparison for me will be with them fitted to a Xenon-equipped vehicle though, with the X-tremes as the main beam bulb. Anyway, it will hopefully highlight the difference anyway.

Sidelights - I've found the Philips Bluevision w5w to be not actually that blue, but they do look a bit brighter and crisper than the standard fitments. The probably don't appear that blue because the ones I've tried are 3400K. Think they might have introduced some new ones at 4000k though. So that will result in the crisper light I mentioned, but the Kelvin value is a little bit too low to appear blue. You'd need 6000k or probably 8000k for a proper effect. Nobody does these that I'm aware of, and don't know if it's even feasible in such a small bulb. There's no real effect on visibilty anyway, I just like them more as they don't look like small candles in there any longer, especially when you upgrade dipped and main. Tends to highlight them!

Anyway, how much have I waffled on there?! - I'm sure you get the picture ;)

Steve

I want to see what improvement the XTremes give (if any) through the projector lenses fitted to the Octy II.

I had standard lights on my Octy and should get them Tuesday/Wednesday.

I will do some pic's of the current bulbs and then some of them fitted...

Hooray - my neighbours took mine in for me x days ago, so I now have them in and fitted. Will have to wait for a night run though to see how they compare to the excellent Silverstars :D

Chris

Bugger it - completly forgot to takes photos before - will takes some pictures tonight.

Must say fitting the H7 was easy... and replacing the main beam and indicator would also be simple

I got the free blue vision w5w, but was unable to get the existing sidelight bulb out and I suspect either patience or a special tool is required to extract the holder.

Has anyone replaced the indicator with Silver bulbs?

Good work people - I've not had chance to do mine yet, will see if I can squeeze it in sometime, but I'm fairly busy this week, and away this weekend

Also need to see how flexible my limbs are feeling, and attempt to exchange the main beam bulbs of a Xenon-equipped Fabia without resorting to bumper removal! Wish me luck

Cheers,

Steve
