Mk1 VRS Rear Brakes

Featured Replies

Now I know this subject has been done to death and for that I apologise. However I took my car in to have the warranty kit fitted to the rear brakes as they had started to squeal like a stuck pig! The kit made the problem worse and I now have two heavy metal cylinders hanging off my rear brakes! I took everything apart this weekend and cleaned things and re-assembled using copper grease which as gone some way to solving the problem but it has not cured it 100%. I had a MK4 golf estate with rear discs and seem to remember that the pads had 3M tape attached and were stuck to the calipers. I am thinking A, the warranty kit is pants! B, The main dealer should have done the grease job I did or C, ignore the grease and go for the 3M tape.

Any help would be much appreiciated:) Thanks!!

Mins started to squeal after new discs and pads on the rear. Happened for the first 1,000 miles. Now it does it occationally. I only used copper grease on assembling mine.

How long have the discs and pads been on the rear ?

My 05 VRS rear brakes had the typical loud groaning noise in reverse problem. After reading all the threads on here about the warranty fix kit, when I took it in for it's first 10K service last year I asked for it to be sorted.

The dealer claimed not to be aware of the issue (and fix) and instead took the rear brakes apart and did the liberal application of copper grease thing. Charged me for 30 mins additional labour, which I was annoyed about at the time.

However, this does seem to have largely cured it. It's a lot better than it was anyway. Seems to be a better bet than the "kit" that's been mentioned.

Cheers

05 Vrs only done 10000 miles, I don't think that has helped too much. The warranty kit is less than useless, I will take it back to the main dealers and get the original parts back.

It started with the load groaning sound which I have had almost since the car was new, but now it has turned into major squealing from the rear only. When I dismantled the brakes they had no grease at all. (As it came off the production line I presume)

I just put up with the odd honk while reversing and braking (does turn a few heads, hehe) rather than incessant squealing.
