Sometimes very bad vibration at idle

Featured Replies

New vrs now covered 900 miles. It sometimes shakes badly at idle - not the normal amount - much more and it is often when the engine has warmed up. It has been back to the garage and the revs are now steady at 900 rpm with the needle not moving (as it was before) but the pulsing/shaking still often occurs. Has anyone else had this. I am not talking about the 1800 rpm stutter - this is when the car is stationary. Any ideas welcome as it will be going back to the garage but they say they have not come across it before.

Mine's a TDi rather than a VRS, but the symptoms sound just like you describe. It's as if the car is being buffeted in very strong winds, right? Or as though somebody's stood outside and giving it a gentle shove every few seconds? Mine started doing this immediately after I'd had the engine stabilisers replaced. The mechanic told me this is to be expected because the engine is now far more firmly fixed to the frame than when the stabiliser was damaged. The car had 32K on the clock when I bought it, so couldn't say whether it happened when it was new. I've clocked up about 4K since I had the stabilisers replaced and the symptoms do seem to be less severe than immediately after the repair, so maybe it's 'settling in' now?

Hi

You could get the engine mounts checked out

If not it could be down to the dual mass flywheel

But you need to get the engine mounts checked out first of all

Thanks for the various suggestions. The vibration is of a higher frequency than a type of wind buffeting.

I thought about the fly wheel not being regular but the engine mount sounds a possibility as it is like a kind of resonance.

Anyway, it's going back in on Tuesday and they are loaning my wife a car until it is sorted. Unfortunately the round trip to the garage is more than 90 miles.

The Dual Mass Flywheel has springs inside it to damp vibrations.

If these fail then the car can certainly vibrate.

I'd agree with the above suggestion to have the dealer check the engine mounts first though.

I have the same symptoms although bizzarely the vibration stops when the air con is on!

teech, thanks - just tested and ours is the same. Air con on and vibration stops. Perhaps this suggests a rotational imbalance that is cancelled when the air con is operating.

I've noticed the same. It dsappears with a few revs. It might be that the air con revs the engine slightly. Would be interested to hear what the garage says.

I will report back with their solution (?) later next week. The revs are already slightly higher than they were originally after the garage looked at it last week so I am not certain it is just a rev matter. It doesn't always have the bad vibration so it may be the postition of something and a resonance effect.

Just an update:

They said it is probably the Engine Management System. The fact that switching on the air con stops it temporarily indicates it's teh EMS as a signal is sent when it is turned on to expect a heavy load and the system adjusts accordingly. Currently there is no fix for this problem as Skoda don't have it down as a reported fault. My garage say nobody else has reported it and Skoda know nothing about it. The garage have promised to take it up with Skoda and try to get them to do a fix. The garage can't do anything mechanically as it is a software issue.

I'll mention it to the dealers when my car goes for a service and see what they say.

I would be interested in what your mechanic says. I will report back when they have information from Skoda.

Nobody has reported it hey...

Why do garages say this all the time? While it might be true in this case I don't believe them as they claim it so often.

Is it worth popping a poll up to see who has this issue?

An update for those with a similar problem:

The technician has spent a considerable time with the car today and liaised with Skoda with various diagnostic results.

The vibration is much better (though whether it is quite acceptable I'm still considering). He changed 'something' so the mg/H has changed from 3.3 mg/H to 4.4mg/H.

To help me decide whether it is acceptable I would like someone to say whether the the later cars (06, 07) have a slightly rougher idle than earlier fabias (vrs) - if they do, then so be it.

Hi.

I have had noticed this from day 1. When at traffic lights and waiting a while then the engine starts rocking, not side to side but rather it feels like a back and forth rocking. I have this wether remapped or standard, with or without "stutter fix" applied. It has been there from day 1. Not a big issue to me but slightly disconcerting. The EGR explanation sounds plausible.
