Bad Luck, or a sign of things to come?

Featured Replies

This is really for high mileage owners of the 110 TDi who are between 120k and 160k.

I've racked up the mileage to just over 130k in the slightly less than 3 years I've had the car. Outside of routine servicing have had the following "problems" since getting the car at 3 years old and with 42k on the clock. (It's a 2001 Elegance):

At 60k service the aircon clutch had been true to type and fallen off (this was thankfully covered by the years warranty I got from buying from a Skoda dealer)

The switch under the brake pedal went on a trip south and was replaced mid journey by Mitchells at Cheshire Oaks (maybe it's because we were on the way to a funeral but the service was legend).

At 70k or thereabouts the front wheel bearings started rumbling and were replaced (both within about 10k of each other).

At 90k the wishbones were replaced as the bushes had worn.

As I said apart from the above nowt but routine servicing every 10k and the belts/water pump done at 60 and 120.

Thing is......

Last week the steering started making a funny noise turning right and on Friday I had a steering ball joint replaced at the local independent garage. Then on Sunday the rear drivers side passenger window took an unexpected tumble into the door as the regulator failed. (quite alarming when cruising along the motorway to have the window magically open on it's own in about 0.5 sec!)

Now that the car has reached a "high mileage" and is 6 years old is this a sign of things to come?

I have no fear that the engine is good for a lot more but am slightly worried that the rest of the car might start failing and need things (expensive things) replaced. Is it just bad luck that after 3 years of trouble free motoring I've forgotten what it's like to have to get things fixed in quick succession which aren't in the service schedule?

A work colleague has a slightly newer Octavia of identical spec and so far his is mirroring mine to within a few 1000 miles (e.g. wheel bearings having had enough around 70k). Extrapolating this can anyone with a big mileage let me know what's on the horizon?

I'd really like to keep the car for another year at least so that I can save up a nice deposit for a replacement, but I don't want to eat into the deposit fixing loads of stuff on the existing car, that to date hasn't been a problem.

I would say thats good going for any car racking up the milage like that i changed my suspension arms about 40k as for pedal nothing yet

Very reliable cars compaired to say anything french

So i wouldn't overly worry

Yeah, as a student I had a couple of Citroen BXs. Great when they worked.

I figure not having to use the benefits of my AA subsription since getting a Skoda is payback for all the times they had to bail me out!

There was nothing wrong with the BX, especially if you changed the LHM from time to time as specified.

Racked up a quarter of a million miles with a lot less problems than either of the skodas I have owned.

That plus they were very easy to work on, had a roomy window bay and didn't have stupid things always going wrong.

Oh and IMHO it handles a lot better than the octy MK I too :)

Im sad to have to agree with you, weve had 2 BX's & a Xantia, a bit quirky :) a bit rattly inside but all gave fantastic service with very few problems. Also incredibly comfortable

Bx's were great, I've had 5.

Apart from aforesaid niggly things, and having to carry bits of rubber pipe in your pockets.

Your Octavia sounds like any other 'leggy' car tbh.

Once the niggles are sorted, keep it another 12 months to recoup your expenses, and you are back where you were, or maybe a bit in front.

Yep BX very underated IMO, we used a non turbo 1.9 Diesel as a Balloon retrive vehicle at times, just jack it up & head across the field although it had to be dry. The army lent us a big field known locally as Salisbury plain one bank holiday & it did itself proud across there as well. A great towing vehicle as the suspension just sorts out the load. Went to the Midi Pyrenees with it as well towing a balloon with 4 people & spare tanks for another balloon, did incredibly well but we lost the brakes a couple of times on long descents

As for the Octy, our 110 tdi is now up to 115,000, it was remapped at 8000 miles & still runs as sweet as ever, apart from the usual niggles is still going well, seeing how many miles some Taxis are now on I would keep it but start using scrap bits & non main dealer for servicing. Im guessing with a bit of research you can find a local independent VAG specialist. They really are great cars & had very little wrong when new unlike the Mk 2 Octy which appears to be generating a lot of threads re faults, this cant bode well for the longecity of the vehicle.

If you are keeping it a long time its getting close to the point when it might be worth changing the gearbox oil, its never changed for the life of the car but we recently had a bit of selection problem & new oil sorted that & made the box as sweet as new, it cost

Mine was at 138,000 when I got rid. I think it was about to expire. Turbo was getting iffy, exhaust was starting to go an the suspension was fubar. I worked out that the repairs would cost about
