Hi Nikos72,

Sorry to hear you're not having much luck with the new Fabia. One thing I would say is that if it is the temperature sensor at fault, replacing it could well solve all of the problems you list (except the handbrake - obviously!) There are step-by-step instructions how to do it here, if you've not already seen them!

As for the handbrake, it might be worth having it adjusted and/or having the rear drums checked over. When my wife first got her car (1.4 MPi like your partner's) the handbrake was very loose, and had to be jammed on tight to keep the car in place on anything other than a flat surface. The cable was adjusted at service and it works fine now!

Cheers

I'll be more than happy if the temp sensor sorts it out :)

I have a V reg MPI , one of the earliest UK cars with a build date of Jan 2000 , and mine has none of the faults you have with yours , Ive even had it up to an indicated 100mph (on a private test track , of course). Methinks you have a 'bad un'! I hope you can get it sorted out!

PS average MPG according to the on board MFA computer is usually between 36-38 MPG urban , and mid to high 40s on a run.

Hello. First, I haven't a clue why your new one seems to be worse than your old one. Sorry.

I have a Y reg and the manual says to run the engine a minute, rather than jumping in and setting off. Not had that particular problem, though in cold weather I suppose that's taken as read.

I do have the same "getting up steep hills" problem (much worse with a/c on or loaded car). I know to stay in a lower gear.

I've always reckoned that my 8V is too heavy for the power TBH and mpg is not good by comparison with other hatches, but I'm happy generally hoping that the weight comes from side-bar crash protection etc.

Re handbrake, it's a nightmare for me if a manfolk drives any car I've had, as they pull it up too tightly - ain't no way I can release it and it's stretched the cable.

Probs not much help - just my take on it.

Best

Nikos72,

have you replaced your temp sesor? has it made any difference.

I had a similar problem with my 8v mpi, just replaced my sensor as noticed that it took about 13miles to get upto to temp.

bugger to start off in the mornings kangarooing.

will have to see if it cures it as SWMBO drives it.

first day back at work so will report tomorow

I have a Y Reg 1.4 8vMPI Comfort and suffer the same stuttering at start up and poor consumption - Get around 230-240 to the beep from a full tank.

I was getting about 210 to the beep but did a full service on it myself and am now getting the extra 20 - 30 out of it.

I've ordered a cable for VAG-COM so I can check any faults, might be worth a go doing this yourself.

SWMBO said car stuttered when starting off from cold no power then picked up.

get to a junction and have to give it a little rev to move off.

you cant just drop the clutch and move off (like my other car pug 205D)

is this normal for an MPI?

any ideas what to check next? (as the temp sensor has been changed)

Sorry the temp sensor hasn't fixed anything. From what Mo's said, the stutter-when-cold seems pretty normal. Must admit, on the occasions when I drive my wife's MPi, I tend to over-rev when pulling away, as I'm used to the heavier throttle pedal on my vRS - so I don't experience the stutter, but I don't know whether or not it's there! Then again, SWMBO hasn't ever mentioned it, although she also gives it a bit of throttle when pulling away (just not as much!!!)

I'd be surprised if you could pull away by just letting the clutch out in the Fabia. The 206 diesel's extra torque is the key here. I think the only petrol car I've ever driven that could pull away from idle was my parent's Volvo 240! Having said this, I believe the ECU has some sort of anti-stall system that will automatically bring up the revs if it thinks you're about to stall. I can't imagine it's a terribly refined system, so that might be the reason for your stuttery starts!

thanks Ap0gee,

I think I might be a bit picky as when I have driven the car I too give it a bit of beans.

so pulls off ok, I have noticed its just heasitant when cold to pull away at the inital off after starting the car but not allways.

but I have been spoilt as we used to drive an A4 2.6 V6 so baggs of torque.

pulling away no problem. so I might just be needing to ajust to the lack of torque/power.

plus the fabia is quite a heavy car for a 1.4 .

should have gone for the VRS but funds wouldnt allow it (bugger)

will get the car checked for anything stored on the ecu though.

Never a bad idea - might be worth seeing if there's anyone on here local to you who's prepared to do it, rather than taking it to the stealership...
