Brake Configuration??

Featured Replies

Anyone happen to know the brake configuration for a fabia 16v comfort?

i.e. am I right in thinking discs front and back, pads fronts and shoes back?

*should really learn more about brakes...*

More likely to be discs/drums, pads/shoes Steve.

It's difficult to see through the little holes in my steel wheels, but it looks like a shiny disc at the rear...

OK, that will be discs/discs, pads/pads then ;) Not near ETKA ATM so can't tell you for sure - the owner's manual must tell you though...

Believe it's all round discs...

round discs...

Sorry, I meant all-round discs... :P

I know :)

Only reason I'm asking is because I was sure it was discs/discs, and have ordered some replacement stuff... popped into dealer to book car in for some work (including the brakes), and the guy I spoke to thought there were shoes on the back - but that only applies to drums??

<-- Clueless, have you guessed? :D

The Skoda brochure for the Fabia says:

Drum brakes with two self-adjusting brake shoes, or disc brakes (depending on engine type).
so I'd imagine with the 100bhp 1.4 engine, you'd have disc's all round. It looks like the PD100 has rear discs, but I might be wrong :)

Though the 1.6 102bhp Octavia has drums on the rear... :)

Stimps - just take your rear wheel off and look, it won't take much time! :D

Well, there's a shiny disc looking thing back there....

Are shoes only used with drums? :clueless smile:

Yep shoes are only used with drum brakes. Have a look on www.howstuffworks.com for a full explanation ;)

Sounds like you have discs though :)

Clearly the Fabia is a more advanced and therefore better car then :P:D Next you'll be telling me the 1.6 is a manky old 8v engine rather than a nice new efficient 16v one :P:P;):D

So I should be ok having ordered a set of discs/pads for front & rear then?

How is pushing the same amount of fuel/air mix through two holes instead of one more efficient? :P

Rob.

If it's shiny it's a disc. Drums are dull in colour - either painted or bare rusty cast-iron - and typically the front surface of the drum is just behind the wheel spokes. With a disc there will be a 2 inch or so gap. You should also be able to see the caliper either at the front or rear of the disc - imagine it like a hand that grabs hold of the spinning disc and squeezes it to stop it turning. Look at the fronts for a comparison. Yes shoes only go with drum brakes.

Plus when you order the parts if the supplier knows what they are doing they should ask you what model it is and be able to tell from that.

Because the two holes are contained within another circle, which limits the size one hole can be (it has to be less than the radius of the big circle). Thus the area of the two holes can be almost double that of the one hole.

Does this help? Or were you just being deliberately obtuse, as usual? :P

Ah, so it can deliver somewhere between 1-2 times the amount of fuel/air mix for any given time? So it will actually use more fuel? :D

Not strictly obtuse, I'm just aware that a lot of manufacturers (certainly in the early days of 16v) drilled the extra holes for marketing purposes, but fuelling was still controlled the same, so it made naff all difference...

Rob.

Actually most of the gain is in extra EXHAUST valve area (this is why 3-valve engines came about, and of course 5-valve like the 1.8T). But the engine is able to draw in more mix at full chat if allowed to by the fuel management system.

Edit: but of course there are losses through having to drive more camshafts.
