This review from Autoexpress would seem to be at odds with the group test review they did with the Getz last week. The new Fab is also Autocar's favourite supermini at the moment.

Also test drove the Swift - in both 1.5 GLX and 1.6 sport trims. The 1.6 sport is a real hoot :thumbup: ... but only returned 26mpg on the test drive - then again, it was getting quite a hammering !

The 1.2HTP 12v - did around 34mpg in mixed town and motorway driving... not hammering it, just driving briskly. Engine has quite a good turn of speed - certainly not hot hatch but better than the 14-15 sec 0-60 time would suggest.

Blimey, my two 2.0i's have averaged 34.7 over their combined 54K miles. That has also been mixed motoring.

The 1.4TDI... was so noisy and vibrated so much that I handed it back after around 1 mile. Not sure if these diesels need to bed in but it was much less smooth than my old Yaris 1.4 D4D.

Hmm. I test drove a brand new VRS (<10 miles) when I decided to go for a 2.0i. Maybe that is one of the reasons for me marking it down.

Don't forget that the engine is not properly run in yet. I've got a 2.0tdi and I'm just about get 45mpg (was around 35-40 when brand new)! I don't really drive like I stole it...buts its only got 4.5k on the clock. Don't think it will get much better till it hits 10k +

Both my 2.0i's returned similar mpg from new - in fact, slightly better when running in because I was taking it easy. So, if one is running a car in, it is easy for this tightness to go unnoticed as far as mpg is concerned.

That is a big variation, if it is truly all due to engine tightness. One could get this variation by the mix of journey types. For example, my average is 34.7 but min/max per tankfull is 29.7/42.5. So there is a lot of noise here. I now get an overall trend by averaging 5 tankfuls at a time. This is my current 2.0i from new to 23K:

I average about 57MPG ave from the 2.0 TDI doing motorway runs and can do significantly better than that (65ish) when I am trying to save fuel.

On that BMW note, I'm off to test drive a 120d and 118d so i'll let you know what I get from them :p

I have a Fabia MK1 1.4TDi Estate, which is around 50 - 100kg heavier then the new one, plus the 70ish kg extra weight I am carrying (Fat Git Is I) so based on that you can appreciate the car has to work more. I also drive the car with abit of purpose, maily because I like to clear it's throat of carbon deposits and keep it running smootly. So this is the figure's for my car: -

Urban - 52.3mpg

Motorway - 65.3mpg

Combined - 56.3mpg (Based on a average using Excel at 30% Motorway 70% Town driving)

Most driving is 7.5 miles max (Work Run) so majority time running cold and I have to go up babylon hill outside Yeovil, which is a steep hill requiring some effort to go up it.

I suspect the figure giving on that review was actually the 1.2 3 pot engine and the twit who wrote it got the figures all mixed up, seems the most logical reason for the figure in question.

I have just taken my Octy in for a service and after seeing pictures, reading reviews etc on the new Fabia, I was fixed that it just didn't have the charm of the older model.

But, today, I though to myself 'have a look at it', so I did and it just doesn't great at all. I know the older version wasn't going to win any style awards, but the new Fabia to me, well, it's just a smaller version of a roomster, which also looks horrible.

Whilst looks are not a major factor me, I should point out that I have not test driven the new Fabia and I would expect it to drive just as good, if not better than the last model, of which I had two.

I don't see how you'd get a 1.4TDi to do 3o ish MPG? I have this engine in a 2001 Polo and in 6 years have never got it to average less than 50MPG, even on fast motorway runs (obviously ones in another country with higher speed limits). Even if the new Fabia is heavier it's a very low figure. Did they test it at Oulton Park or something?

My mothers's Fabia 1.4Tdi Estate regularly returns 57mpg overall. I accept this is not the new Fabia and so isn't like for like. I think, like someone said above, it would be a struggle to achieve 37mpg.

I did get 40mpg out of my 1.9 Tdi Passat Estate on a recent run to Glasgow and back. In order to achieve that I had to load the car up and stick 3 bicycles on the back end. Oh and drive at motorway speeds for most of the journey. I don't think in normal driving I could get either of my diesel cars as low as 37.

Drove a Fabia 3 1.4 Tdi and the engine sounded like a bag of old ball bearings!

Strange, as the first fabia I drove back in 2004 was a 1.4 tdi and that sounded sweet almost as if it could have been a petrol engine. The test drive was a bland, sterile experience, no rattles (apart from the engine), solid but.......boring. Much evidence of cost cutting, the 1.2 engine has lost its shroud, even the bonnet opening latch is back to the old fumble about get your finger dirty looking under the bonnet type. Under the car I notice all the protective plastic traywork has disappeared.

And yes, I deliberately checked out the mpg (the only reason I might buy it) on my test drive. I drove like a Sunday school teacher, the engine was fully warm before I set out with 450 miles on the clock and on a 5 mile jaunt... touching 50mph at one point....I managed 42mpg!!! What??!!

When I got back to the showroom, the old style Fabia (VRS) in the showroom looked a million miles nicer, even though I have tried to "like" the new Fabia (3 visits), it still doesnt do anything for me.

And the next problem...."We don't do discounts sir....its cheap at the price"

So why has my dealer only "sold" 6 so far (none delivered as yet), and why are largeish discounts being offered on the internet?

It pains me to say this but I decided to buy a new Corsa 1.3Ctdi instead which enginewise is much more refined.

One point that hasnt been touched on yet. A lot of newer diesels have worse mpg due to stricter emission regulations. basically if you bung the exhaust up with more things to control emissions you need to burn more fuel to get similar power. Anyone who has a diesel with a dpf will know what I mean. If you drive the car to slowly you get insufficent heat in the exhaust & he car injects more fuel in an attept to raise exhaust temp. Im not saying that this has caused this apparent massive drop in figures but emission regs might be a contributing factor

36mpg is terrible! I'd stick with my old faithful 1.9TDi if I could, regularly got 70mpg+, but I do drive like a granny.

haha, i always find in my 2.0 if im following a steady flow of traffic i get an easy 42mpg! when i drive on my own and i got open roads i get about 31mpg... averaged 32mpg this morning!

Took our new 1.2 for a short run (10 miles) today and it showed 42mpg on the trip. If the diesel can't match that...
