How much oil is too much..?

Featured Replies

Checked the oil today on my vRS and noticed it was up to the top of the indented section. Last time I checked (about 1.5-2k ago) I'm sure it wasn't that high, now either something is leaking into the oil or when I topped it up last I got carried away, and either didn't wait for it to run down fully or the ground wasn't quite level.

Now, am I just being anal and thinking that running it at the maximum is bad for the engine? Should I pull the plug out and a let a little oil out? Or stop worrying, and drive it some more. Surely the maximum is the maximum permitted, so as long as it not over that it should be okay, right?

Cheers, and I'll give a 'thanks' for all helpful replies ;):D

You should always make sure the car is level before doing the oil thing and excess oil can cause a few issues.

Being honest though I think your level is fine and a small varience in the measurement is always going to happen and I would have thought there are tolerences for this.

If there have been not lights up then I would just continue to enjoy the car!

To be honest I don't really remember toping it up :o but it may of been a rush job before I set off for a hack round europe.

I'll put it down to the hot weather expanding the oil ;)

Thanks

I reckon it was probably just a rush top up and so long as it's in tolerances on the dip stick, you'll be fine! :D

It's too much when it's ABOVE maximum.

It's too little when it's BELOW minimum.

It's too much when it's ABOVE maximum.

It's too little when it's BELOW minimum.

hahaha

no 'thanks' is coming your way ;)

Why bother with the hatched ideal range then? Every other car I've owned had a max and min mark
