Decision time ~ 120k

Featured Replies

I've got a 1999 90bhp TDI Octavia that will soon be due it's 120k service.

This is a big one, as it's both ....

a 40k service & a 60k cambelt, water pump etc

The car is totally stock at the moment,

I'm planning to keep it another year or so.

I average 30k & 60mpg+ a year, mainly m-ways.

My local dealer is amazed that it's still got the same

front pads & discs they fitted at 26k when I bought it.

(So I guess I have a fairly relaxed driving style!)

However, I would like to have a bit more uuumph without melting the engine,

it's still got the original clutch too.

Remap? :D

Oh yeah ...

Engine code AGR .... probably the only one on Briskoda

Gearbox code DQY

Main ECU not flash programmable through the diagnostic port.

I was thinking of more air in (Cupra intake, Green panel filter)

injectors from a 110 AHF engine or perhaps an aftermarket equivalent

then either a new ECU or an inline box

Just enough to puzzle Furby VRS drivers?

Has anyone done this on this model of engine & at this mileage?

thanks in anticipation ... Darren

Meant to say for clarity ......

This is a non PD engine with a VP37 fuel pump.

Without an ECU change / Inline box would

changing the injectors just produce more black smoke?

Or would the fuel pump not even increase the fuel flow,

as it had't been told too by the ECU?

If I have it right then you don't need remap to use the increased size of injectors. [edit] coz I got it the wrong way round ... doh

From tdiclub it appears a common trick is to replace the 10mm fuel pump with the 11mm pump from the Automatic which has the same effect as going up an injector size ... tdiclub is back up by the way ... definately check it out ... espectally the the FAQ and in particular section 6 Performance.

yeah thanks again thephm

I managed to have a trawl around tdiclub & kermatdi

They all seem pretty keen on bigger nozzles.

I'm not 100% sure if I can determine which has a greater

effect on the quantity of fuel delivered, the pump or the nozzle.

I'm guessing that as there's more auto's than manual in the USA,

hence that's why they favour that swap.

Reading the FAQ the autos use a smaller nozzle and then pump more fuel for emissions reasons (at least in the US). Though with an AGR engine code I think you have an a3 platform which means the pump won't fit ... the 11mm pump was introduced in the a4 platform (note a3 and a4 are not refering to the Audi cars of the same names ;) ) Also the 11mm pump puts more strain on the engine so I rekon it would be better going to bigger nozzles.

Well one thing that's reassuring, no-one has shouted ....

DON'T MOD IT 120k is too old.

Spoken to a well known VAG tuner,

they suggested just a re-map,

as nozzles would be too much for the turbo.

I'm pleased they've suggested to be conservative,

rather than trying to squeeze every possible hp from the engine

(& every

TBH - now is the time to swap it

Used to private-hire - last car Cavalier 1.7TD

Fine until it got to 100k or so.

Then, one thing after another would go - in 3's usually :thumbdwn:

So, you've had a good run, so far.

Trade it in, get a demo / low mileage car - and then enjoy another few years of virtually no maintainence.

Hmm, I had that thought myself,

however, I've been in loads of Octy mini cabs with 200k plus.

I've known some go over 400k, so it's barely run in.

Plus, I've recently had some work done on the house

& I'm spending money on the restoration projects.

So in short, I don't want to stretch the budget.

Plus in 18 months there will be Octy VRS TDIs coming off 3 year PCPs.

Although I still harbour aspirations of a 2.5 V6 TDI Superb too.

I had a look in price guide the other day,

p/x value of mine is erm half a pack of fags & a bag of crisps! Ouch!

May as well run it for another year to bring the pence per mile down!

Yup, tough getting the timing right (as the actress said to the Bishop  ).

"however, I've been in loads of Octy mini cabs with 200k plus."

Sign of a well-misspent youth :P

Decisions, decisions.

And, yes, heard similar stories about Octavia mini-cab reliability

Best of luck - just thought I'd put my 2 pennyworth in but you seem to have already done some of the homework

I have run cars to 250k+ and what anonymous says is IMHO fairly true.

At about the 80-120k miles mark little things start to go wrong, and then a bit later bigger things. You will end up possibly fixing major components getting past this sort of mileage, eg gearbox might need attention.

If it was me, I would probably sell it on and get a new model. The newer car will have more power as well as supposedly having less issues.

I disagree with reliability concerns. Yes you may well get the odd niggle, but as long as you keep on top of them the car will remain tiptop. And I have a 120k mile Passat thats like new...

I wouldn't hesitate to get a conservative remap either, but tbh I'd leave it at that.

TBH the only thing I've noticed compared to the dealers courtesy cars...

Is my clutch is a bit heavier ....

but then again, I wear size 11 steel toe cap boots most of the time.

Can anyone beat 90k on a set of brake pads btw?
