vRS Oil for Fixed Interval

Featured Replies

I know the topic of Oil has come up a number of times....most of the time for those on Variable.

Mines on Fixed (4.5k since last service), from what I know it has Fully Synthetic in it. Its about 1/4 above Min at the moment. So does it require oil yet ?

Whats the difference between Min & Max, I was under the impression 1 litre but was told today that to get Max you'd need 3/4 litre from Light on (which must be less than Min).

IIRC I was told

I can get away with 1 litre of 10W-40 as a top up (I'd rather get proper stuff as it may need another top up before next service). I'm a little confused now as to the numbering system.

So,

Does 10W-40 refer to a Semi-Synthetic ? I was under the impression all oils have coding, be it 10W-40 etc, are they then just marked Semi or Fully ?

Does the coding 505.01 on the Back refer to a Fully Synthetic ? Or can both have it.

Is there then a LongLife Fully Synthetic ?

I was told there is Shell Helix in it, so would like to keep the same in it so from looking at there website you have Shell Helix Ultra, Shell Helix Plus & Shell Helix Super, any ideas which I should get ?

Cheers for the help.

I can't answer some opf your other questions, but I can answer this one.

Castrol Edge 5W-30 is a longlife fully synthetic that meets VW504 spec. (that's a higher spec than is actually needed too) In fact, according to the blurb for it, it was designed specifically for VW and Audi engines (no mention of Skoda :) ). Spec sheets for it are on Opie Oils if you want to have a read. Opie Oils keep this particular oil, as do Halfords, although if you join the Opieoils website, you get a discount for being a Briskoda member, which made their 4L container of the above oil,

:(

Mine is on variable so I use longlife. As long as the oil you buy meets or exceeds the spec required for fixed, 505.01 if thats the one, then it will be fine Colm.

I always keep a litre in the boot so it's not really an issue on how much is between Min and Max, if it needs it I put it in. I don't normally run at the max though, somewhere in the middle is adequate. Perhaps that why I don't burn as much as other TFSi's??

'10w40' is the 'weight' of the oil indicating the viscosity of the oil at two different temperatues. You can get semi of fully synthetic in different weights. If your running fixed servicing then anything is better than nothing, one litre will fill min to max. I personally would go for a fully synth 5w30 oil doesnt have to be variable oil.

If you can get to a VW/Skoda dealer ask if they have any Quantum gold oil, pretty good in my book for the price.

It was the dealer that gave me the detaills in post 1...ie 10W40 & 505.1. I'm just afraid of putting in the wrong stuff & over filling (hard to get a proper flat area).

An oil "rating" of, say 10W-40 denotes the oil viscosity at 2 temperatures, 0C (the 10W [for Winter] bit) and 100C (the 40 bit).

With regard to the issue of getting the car on flat ground, don't worry too much about it. Instead do this:-

1) Park the car and leave it for a bit to allow the oil to settle back.

2) Dip it and note the level.

3) Add 0.5l (by guess if you've a 1l bottle) and allow that to drain down for 20 mins or so.

4) Dip it again and see how much the level's risen.

5) Add a bit more oil til you think it's "about right".

6) Don't stress too much; unless you dramatically over-fill the engine (and there's not much danger of that from what you've said) being a little over the mark won't do much if any damage.

 Any ideas of the various Shell products and which to go for ?

Sorry mate; I've got a diesel, and it presently uses more oil from being dipped weekly than from real consumption! ;)

I picked up a bottle of Castrol Edge today, they only had 5w-30, it didnt have 505.01 on it though  It says VW 504 00 / 507 00. I haven't put it in yet...so shout if its wrong

Does it have an SAE rating such as SF or SG on the spec list?

A few weeks ago, I dropped Opie Oils an e-mail asking specifically what oils were suitable for the vRS TFSi engine on a variable service. I got a reply suggesting 2 diffferent manufacturers of oils at 5W-30 rating, one of which was the Castrol Edge Oil that you have bought and is the one I bought myself. Having read the specs for the oils in question, this oil is a VW504 spec oil that exceeds the requirements for not only the standard service interval, but the variable service interval too, and was deisgned specifically in conjunction with VW/Audi as a llong life fully synthetic oil for their engines, and specifically has anti-wear and deposit agents for TFSi engines. Presuming your sig details are right and you are also driving a TFSi Oct vRS, then you should be pefectly OK with this oil.

Thanks for the info, Yea I have an Octy vRS Mk2, I'm happy enough that the Edge 5W-30 oil is okay with the car, just not 100% sure if its okay to mix a 10W-40 (which is what I was told was put in at 10k) & a 5W-30 I have for the top up.

From what I recall the Garage said its okay to mix up to 1litre of Semi Synthetic with Fully, but with the way the FSI uses oil it'll probably need another top up prior to next service, so was afraid the same might be the case for the 10W-40 & 5W-30 it might be too mixed if ya get me :) ....probably I'm being toooooooo over cautious :)

Sticker just has SAE 5W-30 VW 504 00 / 507 00

Sticker just has SAE 5W-30 VW 504 00 / 507 00

Reasons for that already explained.

For the shell stuff I think that the blue stuff will suffice for fixed and the grey bottle is for variable.

The yellow one is no use in newer cars IIRC.
