What problems are you having?

There was a batch of faulty stalks in the early cars.

mine works fine, press plus to put it on and hold it to desired speed, minus to lower the speed and flick the on/off switch to turn it off without touching the footbrake or clutch.

The stalk on mine is knackered too. It's hit and miss whether it works or not. Drive through a housing estate full of speed ramps and it works (even though it's no use), hit the motorway and no cruise control again. Typical.Dealer said they had never heard of the problem but then conveniently they have never heard of any problems apparently. It's booked in anyway.

Perhaps they can conveniently sort it at the same time... It does annoy me when no-one has ever heard of certain problems that are very much known about as people here have been told by other dealers it is a common problem

Dunno if that is baqd information sharing or bad distribution of info, hard to say..

Hope you get it sorted

This was issued in 2005 -

If the cruise control intermittently stops working or does not work at all when driving Octavia II vehicles at a constant speed, it is necessary to check the fault memory of the steering column control unit (Address group 16)

If fault code 00895

it was working fine again today....weird:eek:

thanks for the replies:thumbup:

That I'm lead to believe is the symptoms.

Don't ya just love that bull**** :)

Deffo a stalk problem. Mine acted exactly the same and (on this occasion) the dealer seemed to have a good ideat as to what it might be. replaced the LD cruise stalk and not a problem since!!

How spooky mine just packed up over this weekend, mine is is a November 2005 vehicle so I guess it could be one of these VRSTu mentioned and boy do I miss it.

Must phone the dealer and get this fixed, but it is only the second problem I have had to date so it is not to bad.

This is definatly a known issue. I had this problem and the dealer admiited there was faulty stalks on some cars and replaced it under warranty. October 2005 car.

If you do a seach on this forum you will find a previous thread.

Mine seems to work fine except for that it doesn't brake as well as it could do when you go down a hill, i.e. you speed up a few mph. It doesn't do it significantly but more noticeable when I have the GPS operating.

It's not designed to, you have to keep the speed in check yourself going down hills.

I was sure my Golf used to. Will check with my brother as he has that car now..

The only braking effect you'll have is the engine braking.

Was the Golf a TDi in which case the engine braking is more evident.

CC doesn't operate brakes at all.

Only was to get control like that is with an Adaptive Cruise Control which maintains a (user) set distance from the vehicle in front using measured braking and acceleration to do this combined with a radar emitter behind the front grille. Fitted to most Jag Landrover products.

TDi  I'm no tractor lover!

It was a V5 Stu.

Engine breaking must have been what it was then.

its acting up again....booked in for Tuesday morning!

Had my cruise control checked out today and they have confirmed stalk is faulty.

Yes they also had a Bulletin on the problem.

Replacement stalk been ordered.

I had word from Mcgyver last night about his CC acting up, I put him in contact with this thread. AFAIK theres a New Stalk on order today.

eventually had my car in yesterday and the fault that had shown on the computer is now cleared but if it happens again i am to bring it back so a new stalk can be ordered.

Mick.

On a sort of related note to the "braking" remarks, Mercedes-Benz CC DOES operate the brakes - so CC maintains speed both up and down.

I know this is probably useful in this day and age of "Safety Cameras" - but I felt it was environmentally detrimental.

ie extra fuel used going up a hill, but no payback going down as the car would brake away any additional benefit.

This annoyed me in the end, and as anyone who has tried to drive economically knows, braking is the last thing you want to do. I used to deliberately turn the CC off down a hill and resume it going up.

On the whole I would rather have the un-braked variety and use my feet as necessary.

That's one reason why I don't use CC to hold 50mph through average speed camera roadworks - if the car holds 50 going up the hill, but speeds up going down the hill, the overall average speed could easily creep up over the limit...
