Tuned 2.0 TD

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I am new to the site.

My question is this, has anyone tuned their diesel Octy Vrs, if so what are the headline figures and what is the driving experiance like.

I have a bluefin tuned Mondeo Ghia X TDCi at the moment and I am looking at swapping for a Vrs estate in Race blue.

I have driven neither car yet as I am working away at the moment (hot, lots of sand, and people wanting to give you a close shave on Al Jazzera)

I am a bit of a diesel convert after the TDCi, but I think I might have to drive both petrol and diesel back to back.

thanks in anticipation

Sam

At the moment I know of only three tuners (two in UK) who have upgraded the PD170 engine:

Oettinger, SuperChips and SKN (Germany). If you ask the others, Revo, Custom Code, APR etc - they will say they are still developing them - so still early days re: choice.

No doubt others may be able to advise of tuners not mentioned, and indeed opinions on the company's reputations.

One big issue seems to be the DPF (diesel particulate filter) - either technical, it gets blocked too quickly with too high fuel settings, or simply it puts the tuners off developing it in the first place if they think they may need to "warranty" it.

Here are the links for Oettinger (195BHP), Superchips (was 213BHP, now 201 BHP due to DPF) and SKN-tuning (214 BHP apparently):

I've heard that Superchips have had problems with mapping diesels with the DPF.

Hell VW have problems with the DPF's on a standard map and they designed the bloomin things..lol.

True...but fair.

Quite probably, that's why they withdrew their 213bhp tune-up in January and have only just released the 203bhp version.

I downloaded their 'before & after' graphs for both and the noticeable difference is that the current (203bhp plot) is a clean and progressive increase on the OE plot; whereas the earlier 213bhp plot showed a definite increase in power and continued (rather than dropping off) amount of torque at c. 3,500rpm and above. The current plot is, interestingly, stronger on max torque as well, but clearly dowm on max bhp..

They have clearly gone for the 'safe' improvement on the current tune-up.

PS> I have not had my vRS TDI chipped and won't be doing so (for insurance reasons) but I am aiming to upgrade the handling department, probably with stronger anti-roll bars.

Thanks for the quick replys, it is somethinh that I might have to look at.

Buy a petrol!!!

But where's the torque?

But where's the torque?

320 ft/lbs not enough for you? ;)

Never!

Spider diesel tuning also provide for the 170 and it won't ruin your warranty

Also,

VRSStu - diesels are just as good as petrol now, just a little more noise for more mpg and torque. Personal preference that's all (not a green flag for a debate btw!)

each to their own - peace

There are fair few "Tuning box" solutions - HOPA, ALPIN, etc - but I left those out as they are more and more unsuitable as engines get more and more complex (think DPF and general emissions or fuel efficiency etc).

They are "piggy-back" modules and "hijack" the original signals from the ECU to the engine.

AFAIK they support only a restricted linear "map" - as they generally just increase any signal to add more fuel at each stage - whereas ECU upgrades replace the manufacturer codes and are multi-factored maps able to interpret multiple input sensor data and adjust fueling and timing as needed.

The tuning box's relative "stupidity" therefore represents a greater risk to the engine's operations (performance, fuel and reliability wise) and is unlikely to fully exploit the engine's true performance envelope.

That said, they do represent a step up from the "EVRY" resistor choke/temp sensor by-pass thingies available on eBay (or save some money and go to your local Maplins if you can solder a resistor or two ;) )

But then you would be truly insane to use one of those on a modern diesel!!

Never!

Wanna bet?

Makefish, "Never!" - was a reply to your question "320 ft/lbs not enough for you?" in the sense of "XXX torque would never be enough for me!"

It wasn't an exclaimation of disbelief (or indeed implication that you were misleading me).

I am aware of Oettinger's 310 BHP/316 lbft FSI-T conversion, for example - but anything approaching this level of power output requires quite serious mechanical upgrades and finances. The beauty of the ECU upgrades is the relatively good VFM they offer and "invisibility".

Oh and I'd be surprised it could still hang on to the PD's 50+ MPG ;)

Try one of these. Costs under

I seem to remember seeing this one at a recent rolling road session too, although from speaking to the owner it seems that further upgrades have taken place since to increase the power and whilst not quite of oil burning proportions, almost 40mpg has been achieved -

and whilst not quite of oil burning proportions, almost 40mpg has been achieved

Sadly not with my right foot!

I had a standard tune Golf GTI FSI-T DSG and it may well have been able to acheive 40+ MPG as stated in the brochure, but only with 97+ RON fuel, downhill, tailwind etc

The fuel stratification only works on partial throttle, hence I found the lean burn incompatible with my driving "style".

This meant average returns on a tank of fuel in the late 20s :faint:

However, my experience with a couple of PDs I owned was that they were very consistent in their parsimony - so PDs all the way for me or the car would never leave the drive. ;)

Hi Guys

We have been tuning this engine for months now, with great results.

Think I need to be advertising this more, as not all tuners seem to be finding the reliable/best way of mapping the engine.

The P-Torque re-map gives gains of +28bhp and +75NM of torque on the 170PD model.

We currently have a special offer on for Briskoda members too. Please see our forum area

Cheers :)

Well, if I could find it.
