37psi on front tyres.......

Featured Replies

is this too high?

Is it ok to have them at this pressure and would this increase the chance of a blow out if I drove over a pot hole etc?

I set them to this as it was the only way to rid of the massive bulge at the bottom of the tyre, plus my left front was wearing badly on the outside edge.

I know the manual/diesel flap says around 32psi for fronts but surely that is way too low as they look flat at that pressure.

The tyres are the ones that came with the car 12k miles ago, continental sport contact 2.

I know it's quite a long and boring debate but I just want to confrim 37psi is safe.

I have 36 psi in the Toyos at the front of my vRS for the same reason - they look silly at anything less. No problems yet, wear is even and the car seems to roll along easier with this much air in the tyres.

higher pressures tend to handle better, but watch the center of the tyre for wear.... if its wearing more in the middle, the pressures are too high....

plus my left front was wearing badly on the outside edge.

If it's wearing badly only on the outside edge of one side, then I wouldn't think this was related to tyre pressure so you might want to get it checked out - could be tracking/wheel alignment or might be like mine and be a worn track rod end (although at 12k you'd hope not!).....

As for running 37psi, I can't see any real problems although I'd try a few pressures and see which one drives/feels best for you... not sure I'd be too worried that the tyres looked flat if they were at the correct pressure! :D

or, if it's the nearside tyre, outside edge, taking roundabouts too fast lol... ;)

Should be no problem at 37 psi - on track days you normally over inflate 5-6psi to reduce sidewall flex under high cornering! Gives you sharper turn in and more feel through the steering - its finding the right balance between response/feel and grip!

I think this possibly could have been because I went through a period of not checking the tyre pressures and this tyre was well underflated when I checked the next time and the drivers side was ok.

well the car is soo much better to drive at the pressures stated, not as much rattle and crashing over speeds bumps, so much more feel through the steering wheel and possibly more grip.

Will have to keep an eye on the centre of the tyres.

Will the high pressures have any consequences when it's not dry? less surface area on the road?

I used to run both my Octys at 33f 35r, 37 is within design tolerances for the tyre so should be no problem. \will wear more in the centre though.....

i've found the fronts on our fabia vrs were 32psi but both outside edges were wearing much quicker than the middle of the tyre, so its either driving hard or under pressure, I've now upped the pressure to 36psi and the car feels much more stable and more fun to drive and the outside edges dont look anyway near as bad as they used to plus the tyres dont look flat all the time. I deffinatly think 32psi is too low.

what tyres did you have matt? maybe it is just the type of tyre used? I reckon it's skoda not doing their sums properly.

Ive exactly the same tyres as you and I have no wear problems at 32psi:) :)

the higher the pressure the less the rolling resistance - i.e. economy will improve, but the lower the level of grip.

in the summer higher pressures are more bearable but on a greasy cold winter road a high pressure tyre will struggle to reach optimum temp and will feel like you are on ice even when you are not.

I run 36 front, 32-33 rear.

Doesn't the book state 2.3bar (33.8 psi) for the fronts?

you obviosuly don't go around roundabouts as fast as me ;)

I will get the tracking looked at when I put new tyres on and will keep an eye on them. to be honest I think 32psi is far too low with the conti's on. now the car acts so much better on the road no way near as much roly poly at the front as it was at 32psi

I ran the Conti's at 36psi up front after much experimenting with pressures. Always handy to have a proper pressure gauge too, as you may have noticed that nearly every forecourt air gauge reads whatever it feels like.

I run the toyo's at 36 too :)

I run all four wheels at 2.5bar whatever that is in PSI.

Even wear bit hard now and again but handles gr8 and more feeling though the wheel and turns in quicker too.

I think this is a good free mod to better the handling of the car:rofl:

I call it "air-mod"
