remap - how to check ?

Featured Replies

Ello briskodians, is there a way using VAG COM or similar software to check weather the car has been remapped ? like a code or something displayed ? if so could anyone point me in the right direction of where and what to look for ?

Cheers, Rob.

note sure, but you could check recorded boost pressures from the turbo, against factory settings, if it's remapped, the boost pressures will be higher....

on the single readings for a certain channel on the engine 001 tab will show specified and actual boost, the actual will be higher than the specified if the cars chipped :D easy to check with vag com and easy for insurance people to find :D

I'd just throw it up my favourite stretch of road, personally :D

Sorry not much help :o - luckily, more useful people have visited this thread before me ;)

Steve

Loging boost is one way but not all remaps alter boost.

True, for a diesel, but as this appears to be an octy vRS the I would go with boost.

There might be a sticker on the inside of your petrol filler flap

Not entirely true I wouldn't think.

When a car is mapped the software would be changed to request more boost and hence more would be produced. However if you had an idea of what stock boost were supposed to be then it might help.

The insurance wouldn't be able to do much with a boost log if you've put it on the roof and written it off either would they. I mean they are hardly going to get a power run out of it. :P

Best way is to drive it or put it on a rolling road.

How easy is it to reset an ECU back to standard that has (or may have been ) remapped?

You could visit somone with the appropriate equipment and ask them to flash it back to the original software.

So could the insurance company connect up a crashed car (still running or not) and see it had been re mapped?

A tech bod at a well known tuning company recently told me that this couldn't be done...is there a definitive answer?

Dan

If the car isnt running then I dont see how you can tell.

I dont think you can with a crashed car thats not running, BUT there is also nothing to stop them removing the ECU and putting it into a running car.

Easiest way using VAGcom is to log boost or airflow. Peak airflow divided by 0.8 is approx equal to BHP. This applies to the 1.8T, no idea for diesels.

Just the ECU is needed to check if a car is remapped and it can be connected up on the bench quite easily and the map downloaded. An insurance company may go to this extent if the amount of the claim is high enough.

Easier on diesels, measuring block 010, expected and actual boost.

Thanks for the answers...looks to me as being technically possible (removing the ECU etc as posted above) but in reality unlikely to happen.

If I do go for a re map I'm going to default to my original position and declare it to the insurance company.
