Halfrauds 3 for 2 deal - back on!

Featured Replies

Went to Halfrauds today as the 3 cleaning products for 2 (with the cheapest product free) deal is back on.

So, after reading about so many different car care products that I've never tried before, decided on the following 3 for starters:

Meguiars Scratch X -

Might pop in tomorrow.

was that deal ever "off" ?

haha it alternates between 3 for 2 on winter chemicals in the winter and 3 for 2 on cleaning products in the summer

Let us know how you get on with Scratch-X as I've clay bar'd, polished and waxed the car today and it's uncovered quite a few scratches in the paintwork :(

Chris

Nice selection you've picked up there. Yep, EGP goes very nicely over SRP!

Scratch-X - excellent stuff. Recommended for you Chris, should sort out those scratches for you. It will remove polish and wax though, so you'll need to re-apply in the affected areas. It's probably gonna be hard work if you're talking scratches over a large area and/or multiple panels. I'd say use a PorterCable instead, but I might be a little biased :P

Steve

popped into halfords today and bought myself some autoglym SRP, EGP and sum megiaurs gold class liquid wax, all for under

i wouldnt use a drill one on your paint mate, u need a random orbiting one like the porta cable or similar.

a pc is way out of the question though mate. i simply cant afford one. what will this new attatchment do then? why is sticking one of them into a drill any different to using a pc?

Using it on a drill creates a constant rotary action. You risk going through your clearcoat because too much heat can build up unless you're very careful.

A PorterCable generates a random rotating action, because it has a counterweight on one side. The result is it's much easier to use, and less risky as there isn't the heat build up.

I'd advise extreme caution, or do it by hand. I wouldn't like you to come back on here with a post asking about paint repair :(

Not trying to scaremonger, but it has happened to people.

Steve

where does the heat build up? on the pad?

also, what do you mean by 'random'?

i did consider doing it by hand but i got **** loads of scrathes and swirl marks and surely it would take forever to get them out.

...oh...(sighs)...i dunno.

OK - drill with attachment will just be rotating, quickly. Friction and heat will build up between pad and paint. Risk is effectively burning through the clearcoat.

Random - as explained, the PorterCable has a weight on one side. Because of this the orbit of the pad as it goes round isn't completely circular, as it keeps getting thrown out by the uneven weight distribution caused by the counterweight, hence the random motion.

Maybe have a look on A world for detailers..., and see if there's a detailer near you. It could work out cheaper in the long run.

Yer ponce :P:rofl:

They're a couple of annoying scratches that are about 4 inches long, one on the boot and one of the rear passenger side panel where it looks like someone has brushed against it with something sharpish. Is Scratch-X like T-Cut then and simply takes off the top layers of paint?

Chris

ok ok. doing it by hand will take forever, requires to much effort on my half, and probly wont get rid of all the scratches.

so here we go, can a random orbital sander be used instead of the pc? i cant afford a pc and being the stubborn b*****d that i am, i wanna polish the car myself.

Chris

I suppose it would be classed as a light cutting compound. It will attempt to blend the scratch in by lowering the level of the clearcoat around the scratch.

It's quite a 'friendly' product, as these things go, so you should see a gradual improvement, without risking making things worse.

In my mind, it's more scientific in application than T-Cut, in the chemical mix Meguiars use to create the compound. If you really want some details, I'd ring up Megs UK in Daventry - they'll be more than happy to help and explain. I know I've bored them enough in the past with questions

Steve

Only ask as I've noticed a patch of paint (about the size of a bird poo  ) which has gone slightly dull so I'm wondering if Scratch-X will bring that up nicely or whether to grab some T-Cut too. From what you've said the Megs stuff should be just fine

Chris

I would give it a go before buying anything else Chris. It is advertised as being able to renew shine too.
