I dont know what over all MPG you should get but anywhere from 250-300 to a tank full driving with vigor. (read giving it some beans)

I tend to change up between 3-4 K keeping it in the power band (LOL!!)

You're right, they don't (AFAIK) take any account of wind resistance, or indeed road surface quality, gradient, altitiude etc. etc. But the key is repeatability. If car X is tested under the same lab conditions as car Y, then the difference in their relative fuel efficiencies should be correct. So you wouldn't expect to match the official figures for either car, but they ought to be out by the same percentage if everything else is the same.

Hello Fabia1.4. I find that the fuel gauge needle is not a good indicator as it stays put then drops quickly after the half full mark. It's better re my petrol budget to gauge cost per mile over two or three weeks of similar journeys. One way is to fill the car up to full and not refill till the light comes on each time. After having worked it out, I only fill to half full as otherwise carrying unnecessary weight from the fuel itself.

For my London driving over speed bumps and traffic queueing, I reckon I get about 22-28mph. (edit Sorry, mpg, about 16 mph). As a female, I quite like the 1.4 as it looks like a proper car, rather than a small hatch that someone will carve up. I like it for safety rather than mpg TBH.

After driving bigger cars, it's noticeable when moving to a smaller car that you need one that holds its place on the road. That shouldn't be necessary, but it does make a lot of difference in my opinion. Not a bad car either (given my yearly repair costs being an X reg).

Truth is, Pembo, that each car of any make will be different. Might be perfectly fine, just have to get to know them. (And yes, I've read those sites where every piece is hand carved to make a car travel faster for when they do the tests.)

Another truism is that you have the car you have. Unless there's Super glue on one's driveway of course.

I still think you should be getting more MPG , mine is 10mpg better than that , consistently , over the last 2 years. Which MPG readout are you looking at , there is one that only reads the last trip (MFI 1) , and the other one (MFI 2) records for the last 9999 miles ,100 hours engine use or 1000 litres of fuel. Id expect the average figure on the 1st readout to be between 36 and 38 MPG round town.

PS did you know you can reset both of the memories by holding the reset button (on the base of the wiper stalk) fore more than 1 second. Maybe you should wipe both memories now and start from scratch , then you would be measuring only the MPG since you had the car seen to?

i get about 32-33 round town, does that sound about right? If i really try and drive on a night a lot i can get about 37-38, and on motorways forty something??

Just filled up tonight 249 miles and it was 40.24 litres to fill up so I make that 28.1 mpg bit better.

I can't believe there was 4.8 litres left in (over a gallon) as I was on virtual empty I wouldn't have fancied trying to go another 5-10 miles never 25-30ish.

Just shows the needle is a bad indicator as I had a quarter of a tank in when picked up from garage on Sat and it did 50 miles same as normal but I seemed to have picked up a couple more mpg somewhere.

Heresmo your figures are nearly as bad as mine although our driving sounds the same my town to work an 8 mile trip I prob average about 16-20mph.

As an afterthought, I'm not sure how old the cars are that we are all talking about (mine's a Y reg not an X as I said, doh). However, I am always told at service time that it "needs a good run". Doing that can cause its own problems unless a bit steady, so not to go berserk in one blast BTW.

The mechanic usually quips that if you have square wheels from long hours standing time, it's a good clue LOL, as seemingly engine bits can go square, as well as fugged (clogged) up.

Not really Mo! The car has only left town 4 times in 2 years! Most days it does 2 miles , then sits at work for 8 hrs , then does another 2 miles and goes back in the garage till next morning!! I purchased the 1.4mpi 8v and also had the same problem with crap fuel and sluggish performance. I think for the size of the car the engine just doesnt have enough power same as the golfs a 1.4 engine in a golf is a waste of time, i sold the 1.4 and purchased a used 1.9tdi alough i now have a long list of common probs with the older fabias fuel economy and performance and brilliant.

I'd've thought you'd probably only get 40mpg tops out of the MPi at that kind of speed - I was driving SWMBO's MPi at the weekend on the motorway, and was getting 50-55mpg at a relatively sedate 70. What with wind resistance being proportional to the square of speed, and the Fabia having the aerodynamics of a housebrick, I can imagine mpg in the 30s being entirely possible at high speed...

Mind you, having said that, the thrashing should have helped clear out any gunk in the lines, so maybe things will improve...?

Thats why I was doing the speed I was.

I had noticed that performance was dropping off again going up hills etc so decided to give it a quick blast down the Mway.

We shall see when I work the figures out in the next couple of days hopefully I might hit the magic 30mpg mark.

If my calculations are correct I think I have hit the magic 30mpg mark.

On my last tank I have got 30.67mpg this included a 30mile run at 90mph on the Mway.

I managed 262 miles out of the tank and was halfway in the red would have got to 270 without any problems last time I was nearly on empty at 249.

Does anyone have the litres/gallon figure I should use I can't seem to find it even though I know it has been posted before.

Still don't seem to undertand how there can be 6 litres left though if I was well into the red does the reserve not kick in until you hit rock bottom or something?

:woohoo: Best thing to do to avoid having to factor in the size of the reserve tank, is to do a proper 'brim-to-brim'. It sounds like you've been doing something similar, but the trick is to fill the car right to the top (first click only, though!), reset your trip meter to zero, drive around as you normally would, and then when the time comes to fill up again, fill it to the brim again (one click as before), and take a note of the amount of fuel you added to refill the tank (it's on the receipt of course, if you forget!). You don't need to be empty, but the more of the tank you use, the more accurate the calculation will be! Check your trip meter again, and divide the distance you've driven by the amount of fuel you used. This will give you your fuel consmuption in miles per litre, which you can then multiply by 4.546 to get miles per gallon.

That is exactly what I have been doing

38.84 Ltrs/4.546 = 8.54 gallons

262/8.54 gallons = 30.67mpg

My reserve tank comment was just a side issue that I can't believe it could run anther 30 miles as the needle is rock bottom.

Ive got a 1.4 MPi petrol and was mulling over whether to clear it out with some Redex as like Fabia1.4 it seems to struggle up hills and the MPG isnt so good. Just a few questions though:

1) Anyone ever done this and would recommend it?

2) If so, which one should I get...as a quick browse of Halfords showed 3 different types for petrol engines. Theres One Shot, Petrol Treatment, Injector Cleaner and Fuel System cleaner. Im confused as to which one I should get if I do try it :confused:
