OK, I give in

What is the whirring noise as you open the driver's door for the first time after you have unlocked it?

It may well be in the manual but as mine only has the front half printed twice, I haven't found the answer yet.

mine does that aswell

As no one else has stepped in, I'll say It is the fuel pump priming.

Yep fuel pump. Although i don't see why it has to do it when you open the door, isn't turning the ignition on enough?

Beaten to it as usual :)

If it's on a petrol I'd say throttle body.

Defo fuel pump, it makes a whirring noise for about 1-2 seconds and clicks off.Throttle noise is barely noticable.

I thought it was the fuel pump too and think it is something to do with the security as it does not do it with any other doors, probably for the same reason that the doors re-lock if no-one opens the door within a minute of unlocking them

I don't know really but thought it sounded feasable!

It does it on the drivers door - well, because it's the driver's door ;)

I stand corrected - Just looked it up and it mentions fuel pre-priming.

Yeah, fuel priming - I had it on my Polo and Golf GTi's (both petrol) and my mate's Lupo GTi did this as well. Plus my Ibiza TDi. So it's a VAG family thing :D

Not sure why it doesn't do it on ignition II or something like that - it's a bit of overkill when all you're going to the car for is a CD or something

Steve

All my previous cars primed when the ignition came on, so i imagine it does this so that people don't just jump in and turn the key to start rather than wait for the pump to prime first.

The car will start easier when the pump is primed before starting.

Thanks to everyone for their responses.

It has the air of a "proper" noise so it was definitely in the "irritating not to know" rather than worrying category.

Got to be careful when working on the engine if someone opens the door and you have a fuel line off, been soaked a few times when a service advisor has got into the car to get something for a customer or a service book..lol

 yeah, I suppose that must be a bit annoying!
