How Difficult is it to Replace an Engine?

Featured Replies

As the title really. Looking at a 1.9D AEF engine, straight transplant no mods. How long would it take? And as I know nothing about mechanics, how much do you reckon it would cost (after the cost of the engine).

Its not overly complicated or requiring super skills for a like for like transplant. there will be some heavy lifting and some well seized nuts and bolts, best to have a friend who knows his tools helping out to deal with them, last thing you want to do is strip a thread or break a bolt head etc. cost wise dont know the specifics for this engine, best to allow for a set of inlet exhaust gaskets, oil, oil filter etc etc, possibly engine crane rental and possibly some hoses not huge money but it can add up. As with most car related things something unexpected can turn up :D. Be carefull with how you use the engine crane, dont want to damage paintwork or toes :D. Ive seen some decidedly dodgy lash ups involved in engine \ gearbox work :D

If you've never done an engine swap before, half a day to take the old one out, day and a half to get the new one in. :)

A decent garage would have em swapped within the day - maybe 8hrs at

thanks chaps just researching Ebay at the minute to see how cheap I could get a 2nd hand one.

you will need to find a diesel fuel tank/pump too. plus you will need to replace the fuel lines.

you will need the engine/gearbox/right hand engine mounting/rear engine mount/ecu/engine loom/fuel cut off controller/driveshafts/ dashboard loom

the dash will have to come out too, to replace the dashboard wiring loom (there's an extra relay for the glow plugs!!!)

possibly the fusebox too but i;m not 100% sure about that because i've never looked too closely at the fusebox in a diesel model

it could be done but imho the cost will be prohibitive, unless you can find a scrapper/breaker you can nab all the parts from.... and of course you have plenty of time on your hands

Upgrading the Mazda, then ? :D

A like for like replacement is straight forward but changing from petrol to diesel,

it starts to get complicated.

If you are talking about taking a petrol felicia and converting it to diesel, I would say dont bother. Far easier to pick up a diesel car from the start, far too much messing around with different fuelling systems and electricals etc. Definetely not a job for a novice!

I thought you had a felicia with a dead \ dieing diesel engine and wanted to replace it with another one.

I had my engine swapped as old one was knackered...

Engine was

PittVRS - is this just a straight swap i.e. replacing a poorly engine for the same one...?
